Mayor John Mitchell welcomes government release of Bushfire Commission findings

Friday, 27 August 2010 11:13 AM Media Releases

City of Greater Geelong Mayor John Mitchell said Council was very pleased that the findings of the Commission had been released in time for them to be studied in detail before the onset of another fire season.

He said the solid recent rains would guarantee the strong development of undergrowth in bushland and grassland areas in the lead-up to this Summer season, and he appealed to all residents to be on their guard against a repeat of the last disastrous bushfire season.

“Council will be giving full consideration to all the Bushfire Commission recommendations, including the government’s move to introduce a property-based arrangement to replace the previous fire services levy,” the Mayor said.

However, that is one of the recommendations we will be examining in detail over the next few days,” he said.

The Mayor said Council is strongly in favour of the urgent upgrading and replacement where necessary of powerlines and other ageing electricity infrastructure,” where it is necessary and prudentCr Mitchell said.

“Yes – it’s expensive – particularly across a very large municipality like ours, but you can’t put a dollar value on human life,” the Mayor said.

“Protection of our community – and the people that make it up - is always the top priority.”
