Events held in Geelong over the past 12 months generated around $37.6 million for the local economy and created some 300 full time jobs in the region.

At its Tuesday night meeting the City of Greater Geelong Council noted a report detailing Geelong Major Events for the 2009-10 financial year.

Geelong Major Events Chair Cr Bruce Harwood said major events played a major role in Geelong’s economic development strategy.

“Last financial year Council - through Geelong Major Events - invested around $873,000 in 27 events, which delivered an economic benefit of more than $37 million,” Cr Harwood said.

“Aside from the economic benefits, events boost pride in our region, provide social opportunities for residents and increase community connectedness.”

Cr Harwood said Geelong continued to expand its event profile.

“Last financial year we hosted several new events including the Eaten Alive Travelling Exhibition, the Australia versus China baseball game and the 2010 English National Ballet’s Angelina Ballerina.”

“We welcomed the Jayco Herald Sun Tour and the Australian Supercross Championships back to Geelong plus we supported popular annual events including Pako Festa, National Celtic Festival and the Denis Walter Carols by the Bay.”

“We also procured new events including the Geelong Multi Sport Festival, the 2012 Australian Deaf Games as well as an Orchestra Victoria free outdoor concert.”

“And of course next month we’ll host the biggest event Geelong’s ever seen: the UCI Road World Championships.  Geelong Major Events continues to support the staging of this major cycling event, which is expected to attract 300,000 people.”
