Council has officially endorsed the State Government’s Code of Conduct for Community Sport.

The Mayor, Cr John Mitchell, said the recently established Code outlines behaviours that are expected of every person involved in community sport and active recreation, as well as identifying the types of behaviors that will not be tolerated.

“Implementation of the Code of Conduct will ensure that community sport remains safe and inclusive for everybody,” the Mayor said.

Pointing out the importance of embracing the new Code, Cr Mitchell said that in future any State sporting association or club applying for funding through Sport and Recreation Victoria would need to demonstrate their adherence and enforcement of the Code in order to be eligible for funding.

“Clubs have a responsibility to ensure that participation in any community sporting event is free from any anti-social behavior both on and off the field,” the Mayor said.

The City of Greater Geelong has more than 500 sporting clubs and associations that play and reside within its boundaries.

Cr Mitchell said the City supports these clubs and their activities in a number of ways, including:

* access to Council grants

* subsidised use of Council sports reserves

* subsidised access to Council buildings, and

* capital funding to create facilities.

Cr Mitchell said participation in sporting activities had many benefits for a wide range of age groups in the community.

However, he said these benefits could be jeopardised by inappropriate behaviour from spectators, club members, officials, participants, administrators, coaches, parents or other community members involved in the activity.

“Council has a significant investment in community sport, and the benefits that it can bring to the general community itself,” the Mayor said.

“Failure to adequately address issues that threaten this investment in our community could result in a review of an offending club or association’s access to Council facilities and support,” he said.
