Central Geelong shops and businesses will be promoted in regional Victoria and the western side of Melbourne in a marketing campaign funded through the Central Geelong area special rate.

The advertising would include regional television commercials and bus and tram banners and is part of an expanded marketing campaign planned by Central Geelong Marketing – the group which oversees city centre marketing on behalf of the Central geelong businesses.

Cr Barbara Abley who is a member of the Central Geelong Marketing Committee said the the group’s marketing activities in the 2009-2010 financial year delivering an estimated economic benefit of more than $3.9 million to Central Geelong businesses.

“Central Geelong Marketing has introduced many innovative marketing activities including the Central Geelong Farmers Market, Sidewalk Sales, School Holiday Program, QVM Night Markets and Christmas in Central Geelong,” said Cr Abley.

“The ability to market Central Geelong in a collective way not only stretches the marketing dollar further but provides Geelong’s premier retail and business area with its own brand and schedule of activities,” she said.

In 2009 the Central Geelong Marketing Committee was awarded the Mainstreet Australia Management Committee of the Year Award.

The City of Greater Geelong Council is proposing to continue with a special rate for businesses within the Central geelong precinct so it can continue its marketing initiatives.

The proposed new rate would come into effect from 1 July 2011 and conclude on 30 June 2016.

The area where the rate would apply is bounded by McKillop Street, Bellerine Street, the Geelong Waterfront, Cavendish Street and Fenwick Street. there are 1421 properties in the area for which the rate would apply.

The new special rate will build on the great work done during the last two special rate schemes and allow Central Geelong Marketing to extend its program, with a particular focus on capturing shoppers from a geographic area, said Cr Abley.

During the current special rate period Central Geelong Marketing has provided business operators with 25 editions of its newsletter, organised 19 networking events, held 29 training and development sessions and sent 65 electronic information updates.
