City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell and CEO Stephen Griffin today presented Premier John Brumby and the Victorian cabinet a detailed list of the Geelong region’s top funding priorities.

The upgrade of Geelong’s arts and culture precinct, an extension of the Ring Road to the Bellarine, and the redevelopment of the Yarra Street Pier were among the projects put forward during a special meeting between the Premier and his cabinet and local Mayors and CEOs.

“We took the opportunity to present our region’s most important funding priorities to the Victorian Government whilst they were here for their community cabinet meeting,” said Cr John Mitchell.

“It was a further opportunity to impress on the Premier the strategic importance of the Geelong region given the growth pressures facing Melbourne and to highlight the critical projects for which we are a seeking partnership with state government to fund,” said the Mayor.

“Projects such as Future Cities; the arts and culture precinct upgrade, the Geelong Marine Industry Project and the Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre have the potential to provide a significant economic stimulus to regional Victoria,” said Cr Mitchell.

“Other projects such as the Geelong Cultural Precinct Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Plan and an extension of the Ring Road have a critical role to play to ease the pressure of population growth.
“We had an opportunity to speak one on one with Premier Brumby and key Cabinet Ministers including the Minister for Regional and Rural Development Jacinta Allan and the Minister for Local Government Richard Wynne and look forward to working with the State Government to build on the significant growth potential of the Geelong region,” he said.
