City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said Minister Jacinta Allan’s announcement today of a $2 million contribution to develop the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct would kick start an investment precinct of enormous value.

“The Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct is a unique investment location ideally situated adjacent to air and sea ports, rail and major road infrastructure,” said Cr Mitchell.

“The precinct is close to Melbourne and sits at the intersection of major transport routes that link Geelong to the northern and western borders of Victoria and beyond - this makes it an ideal location for industries ranging from logistics to advanced manufacturing.

The $2 million grant from the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund will contribute to construction of an access road and stormwater drainage in the vicinity of O’Briens Road.

At the same time the City is constructing a retarding basin to service the precinct.

The Mayor said the O’Briens Road works program would comprise stage one of the overall project and would provide for a first release of 15.5 hectares of high value industrial land.

Total value of the stage one works is $7.8 million.

“The Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct is a project that can deliver jobs where they count,” said Cr Mitchell.

“Stage One is expected to deliver 120 immediate jobs and up to 2000 jobs over time,” he said.

“Proceeds from the sale of land in stage one will fund further infrastructure development in other parts of the industrial estate, however the scale of the development will require additional public funding if the region is to realise the full value of the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct,” the Mayor said.
