City of Greater Geelong Councillor Bruce Harwood said Geelong Major Events had a successful second half to 2009, culminating in the procurement of the 16th Australian Deaf Games, which will be held in the Geelong region in 2012.
Cr Harwood, who holds Council’s portfolio for Tourism and Major Events, said that during the period July to December 2009, GME had supported 12 events of international and national significance.
He said highlights had included the National Celtic Festival, the Australian Opals women’s basketball team playing China at the Geelong Arena, the inaugural Tour of Geelong cycling event, the Herald Sun Tour (cycling), the Australian Supercross Championships at Skilled Stadium and the finals of the national baseball competition, the Claxton Shield.
“Another highlight was the successful staging of the inaugural Film in Geelong Festival by Diversitat, working with the Geelong Performing Arts Centre and Film Victoria,” Cr Harwood said.
“This event replaced the Shoot-Out Geelong 24-hour Film Making Competition previously organised by the City,” he said.
Cr Harwood said new events supported by GME during the period included the Eaten Alive travelling exhibition at the National Wool Museum and the Australian Amateur Boxing titles.
”Estimated expenditure of almost $11 million was generated as the result of GME and Council-supported events during the period July to December 2009, along with 86 full-time jobs across the region,” Cr Harwood said.
“Also during this period Council provided significant support to the Organising Committee for the 2010 UCI Road World Championships, including the resource allocation of a dedicated officer to coordinate the Host City’s support for the event.”
Cr Harwood said Council had representation of committees established for the event ranging across Operations, Traffic and Transport, Consultation, Marketing and Community Engagement activities.
He said the City had spent considerable time working with the organisers of the Geelong Highland Gathering to achieve a suitable date and location for the event.
“The 2010 and 2011 events will be staged at Fyansford Common, with the event moving back to Queens Park in 2012,” Cr Harwood said.
