The new Leisurelink’s theme park style waterslides have arrived following a long journey from Canada.
The yet to be assembled waterslides will be stored temporarily while works continue on the $31 million aquatic and recreation centre being built on the corner of Pioneer Road and Princes Highway in Waurn Ponds.
The construction site is abuzz with activity. All pool shells are complete and are now being tiled, the concourse areas, hydro pool and spa are almost finished and the wintergarden water play area is underway. Late next month workers will begin erecting the waterslide tower.
The gym and administration area is largely complete and will be handed over in June, then staff will begin the commissioning process.
Construction is expected to be completed in July. The City has allowed a few weeks for set up, staff training and water testing before the centre opens its doors in August.
Member for South Barwon Michael Crutchfield and City of Greater Geelong Deputy Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood inspected the site today.
“Even just driving past, people can see how huge the new centre will be,” Cr Harwood said.
“Leisurelink will have the only Cannon Bowl waterslide in Australia outside of the Gold Coast, plus the Black Hole waterslide will be a unique riding experience. Best of all, the slides can be used year round.”
“With a 50-metre pool, water park and extensive gym facilities, it will be a world class facility that can cater for many,” Cr Harwood said.
Mr Crutchfield said the local community is excited about the Leisurelink development.
“Local residents I talk to are very excited the State Government and City of Greater Geelong have committed significant funding to ensure for the first time they have a world class recreational precinct here in Waurn Ponds,” Mr Crutchfield said.
“I am sure residents will take full advantage of this fantastic facility once it is completed – I certainly will.”
The City of Greater Geelong has provided $28 million for the new Leisurelink and the State Government has contributed $2 million plus the 50-metre legacy pool.
Features of the new Leisurelink facility will include:
• An 8-lane 50-metre competition standard swimming pool with ramp access and boom enabling it to be divided into two 25-metre pools.
• A state-of-the-art gym and aerobics complex with greater floor space and a wider range of equipment.
• Cannon Bowl Waterslide: A 12m to 15m high slide featuring a large bowl (diameter of 12m) which swirls swimmers around before dropping them out of a hole into a pool.
• The Black Hole Waterslide: A 12m to 15m high twisting tube ride in total darkness until swimmers reach the final splashdown.
• Water Adventure Park featuring water cannons, an overhead tipping bucket and a spinning water wheel.
• Kids’ splash pad: rubber flooring play space with water shooting from fountains and jets at random.
• A learn to swim pool.
• A hydro pool for exercise with ramp access.
• Spa/Sauna.
