Names for a new road and a new bridge

City of Greater Geelong has approved a name for a new bridge in Highton, built as a result of Stage Three of the Geelong Ring Road.

Cr Andrew Katos, who represents Deakin Ward, said the bridge, now a Council-owned asset, joins Pigdons Roads and Thornhill Road in Highton, and was to be named Pigdons Bridge, in keeping with the history of the area.

He said it was a requirement of the Geographical Place Names Act that the construction be given a name.

Cr Katos said the completion of Stage Three of the Ring Road had also resulted in a section of Wandana Drive in Wandana Heights being truncated from Barrabool Road down to a point adjoining the Ring Road boundary.

This section of road now requires renaming, and properties on along it will require renumbering, he said.

Cr Katos said Council officers had originally proposed that the section of Wandana Drive north of the truncation point be renamed Sunderland Road, as it appears to be a natural continuation of Sunderland Road.

“However, property owners along the section of road expressed their preference for the adoption of a new name and numbering,” Cr Katos said. “There is flexibility in the Act to allow this.”

“At a final stage of the consultation process Council presented two preferred road name options: Cityview Drive and Brownhill Drive,” he said.

“Fifteen responses were received in favour of Cityview Drive and seven responses in favour of Brownhill Drive.”

The proposal to adopt Cityview Drive as the name for the road was advertised in local media in September 2009, and no objections were received,” Cr Katos said.
