Geelong performers will prove that disability is no barrier to the arts at the DON’T BE A COUCH POTATO CABARET next week.
The production follows the Potato Shed’s successful Don’t Be a Couch Potato pilot program in which people with disabilities develop performance and music skills through a series of workshops hosted by local actors and musicians.
The original cabaret-style production, which involves performers from throughout Geelong, is the culmination of eight months of workshops with professional artists including award-winning US tap dancer Lynne Jassem, international director Carole Mallett, Geelong dance company Collision Dance and internationally-acclaimed bass player Sandy Brady.
The all-abilities performers will display the skills they have learnt from their professional mentors in seven different scenes, incorporating film, music, dance and theatre. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by Brady, guitarist Wayne Jury and percussionist Chris Lavars, while audience participation will be encouraged.
The cabaret has been written and directed via video link by the now Canadian-based Mallett, with costumes designed by fashion students from Gordon Institute of Tafe.
Don’t Be a Couch Potato performers hail from all corners of Geelong including Corio, Grovedale, Belmont, East Geelong, Leopold, North Geelong, Newtown and Geelong West.
