City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell welcomed Friday’s State Government funding announcement for the Leisurelink community hub.
A combined community facility and library will be built next to the new Leisurelink aquatic and sports centre, which is under construction, in Waurn Ponds.
Minister for Community Development Peter Batchelor today announced $767,000 towards the centre’s development.
“It’s a tremendous boost for this important community hub,” Mayor John Mitchell said.
“Co-locating the library and community facility with the new Leisurelink, baseball centre and nearby shopping centre will really bring the community together and make it much easier for people to access the services they need.”
“The south of Geelong is a major growth area and the library and community facility will accommodate current and future residents.”
“The new $31 million Leisurelink will be the biggest gym and aquatic centre our region’s seen so it’s vital that we have complementary facilities to support this major development.”
Cr Mitchell said Council had allocated funding for the Leisurelink community hub in its 2009/10 budget.
“At this stage Council has committed $400,000 towards the construction of the library facility and it will form part of budget deliberations process for next year.”
“The Federal Government has also provided $3 million towards the community hub. It’s fantastic to see all levels of government investing in these essential facilities.”
Furthermore, the City of Greater Geelong has provided $28 million for the new Leisurelink and the State Government has contributed $2 million plus the 50-metre legacy pool.
