The Eastern Park Criterium Circuit link is now completed and ready to host the 2009 Jayco Herald Sun Tour when it comes to the Geelong Waterfront on Friday (16 October).

A 200-metre section of bike path has been installed to connect Hearne Parade with the Eastern Park Criterium Circuit. The $190,000 project has been funded through the Federal Government’s Economic Stimulus Strategy.

The completed criterium will form part of the individual time trial for the 58th Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

Federal Member for Corio Richard Marles said Geelong will be the centre of national attention during the local stages of the tour and the Rudd Government was pleased to fund the improvements needed to stage the event.

City of Greater Geelong Acting Mayor Cr Rod Macdonald said Federal funding enabled the criterium link to be completed in time for the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

“The completed criterium circuit means the public, particularly boat users, can still access the nearby Limeburners Point boat ramp during major cycling events, such as the Jayco Herald Sun Tour,” he said.

“It has also created a steeper climb, which adds an element of challenge for cyclists.”

“Come along on Thursday to Barwon Heads or Friday to the Waterfront and see cyclists from around the world in action,” Cr Macdonald said.

“This significant cycling event will help build the momentum for the 2010 UCI Road Cycling World Championships being held in Geelong next September and October. It is going to be the biggest event Geelong’s ever seen.”
