Cr John Mitchell
Represents: Austin Ward
Cr John Mitchell is the Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria’s largest regional municipality.
Representing the Austin Ward, he was first elected to Council in November 2004 for a four year term and subsequently re-elected unopposed in November 2008 for another four years.
Cr Mitchell was re-elected as Mayor for a two year term for the period from 2011 to 2012 after serving two terms as Mayor in 2009 and 2010. Cr Mitchell was also Deputy Mayor in 2007 and 2008.
Born and raised in East Geelong, John is married with three children and has been employed as a Senior Officer with V/Line since 1969.
He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, following successfully completing a five day residential training program in 2009. The course culminated in a Diploma qualification as a Company Director with national and international recognition. In addition, Cr Mitchell holds a Diploma of Business from the Swinburne University of Technology.
His many community positions have included President of Thomson Football Club, Head Coach of the South Barwon and GAC Sharks Swimming Clubs, Coach of the Australian World Championships Paralympic Team and delegate for Geelong Swimming.
Cr Mitchell holds Council's Portfolio for Communications, Democracy & Governance and Sport & Recreation. At the Council Meeting on 22 February 2011, Cr Mitchell was appointed to a new Portfolio for Geelong CBD, later renamed on 14 June 2011 as Central Geelong Looking Forward.
