L2P Program

L2P is community based volunteer program designed to assist young learner drivers who are facing genuine barriers to obtain the required 120 hours supervised driving.

L2P matches volunteer supervising drivers, with young learner drivers, to help them gain driving experience. L2P provides training for mentors and their leaner drivers, access to vehicles, driving bookings and ongoing support in maintaining the relationship over the course of the program.

To be eligible for the program:

If you are a young person, wanting to obtain your 120 hours of driving practice, you:

  • Must be between 16-21 years old.
  • Must have current learners permit.
  • Must not have access to a supervising driver AND/OR a car to learn to drive in or have other disadvantage which prevents you reaching 120 hours supervised driving practice in order to obtain your Probationary Licence.

Access to the program for young people is via referral. Referrals can come from youth organisations providing services such as welfare, housing, health and welfare, child and family services, education and employment; or agencies such as Juvenile Justice, Neighbourhood Houses/Community Centres and schools.

If you meet the criteria and are receiving services from one of these organisations, speak to your service provider about joining the L2P program.

* Referral organisations please note the young person must agree to the referral and be willing to commit to attending all driving sessions.


To become a volunteer supervising driver:

Young people (aged 16-21 years) can face genuine barriers in getting their licence. Often a young person doesn’t have access to a car or has no one who can act in the role of a supervising driver on an ongoing basis. 

To act in the role of a supervising driver and help a young person build up 120 hours of driving experience. You need to have a full licence and consider wanting to:

  • Develop and maintain a purposeful, empowering, supportive and ongoing relationship with a young person.
  • Provide friendship and non judgmental support to the young person.
  • Provide the time to listen to and support the learner driver and assist them in developing problem solving skills.
  • Meet with the learner driver for at least one hour per week.
