Powered by GreenPower

The City of Greater Geelong is demonstrating environmental care by purchasing 3000 Megawatts of GreenPower (100%) for the period until 2010/11.

The GreenPower is used for Council buildings and facilities and is saving 1310 tonnes of greenhouse gas emission each year.

What is GreenPower?

GreenPower is a government accreditation program for renewable energy. It is bought by your energy provider on your behalf.

Renewable energy is generated from sources like mini hydro, wind power and biomass which produce no net greenhouse gas emissions.

When you choose to buy a GreenPower product the few cents extra you pay in addition to your electricity account each day is invested in the renewable energy sector.

The government GreenPower program organise publicly available independent auditing of energy retailers’ sales and purchases, making sure retailers are investing in renewable energy on you behalf.

How GreenPower works

Companies generate electricity at sites across Australia and feed it into a central electricity grid.

Our homes and businesses are connected to this grid to access electricity. This doesn’t change when you switch to GreenPower. Your energy is supplied the same as before. It just means your energy provider buys more energy on your behalf from renewable energy sources, like wind power, solar, mini-hydro and biomass.

The more people that choose to buy GreenPower the more renewable energy Australia can produce.
