City of Greater Geelong has won two awards in the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Awards.
The City was awarded the Sustainable Cities Efficient Energy Award and the Clean Beaches Cultural Heritage Award.
The Energy Efficient award acknowledged the City’s EcoChallenge program, which recognises the importance of minimising energy consumption.
The EcoChallenge program has introduced several sustainability initiatives around the region, including a wind turbine at Limeburners Point Boat Ramp and the installation of solar PV systems and lighting upgrades at the National Wool Museum and City Hall.
The upgrades are expected to save more than 90 tonnes in CO2-e per annum.
The program has also seen over 1,500 Council staff participate in environment events and training workshops.
City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said the Sustainable Cities award celebrated Victorian local councils who were leading the way in implementing large scale environmental initiatives.
“It’s great to see the City of Greater Geelong recognised for our commitment to significantly reducing our CO2 emissions,” he said.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in the EcoChallenge program, it’s a great achievement,” he said.
The Clean Beaches Cultural Heritage Award recognised Eastern Beach for its well preserved, bold Art Deco design.
The award also recognised the $1.8 million upgrade of Eastern Beach. Works included restoration of the seawalls, rebuilt the dive tower, installed new irrigation for grassed areas, and stabilised the embankment.
“Eastern Beach has a rich history and it’s an honour to be recognised for all the effort put into preserving it,” he said.
“The [murmur] arts project recently brought to life many memories of Eastern Beach, allowing people to use their mobile phones at various spots to listen to historical stories about the site they are standing on.”
The winners of the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Awards were announced at a ceremony last Friday 18 June at Docklands.
