New solar lighting along Waurn Ponds Creek

Council has installed five new solar lights along the path linking the pedestrian walking track along Waurn Ponds Creek to the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre (Pioneer Road).

The energy efficient lighting will make the popular area safer for its many users, especially the high numbers of elderly residents who regularly use the paths.

Buckley Ward Councillor Andy Richards said he had lobbied hard for this project as he knew it was on the wish list for many Waurn Ponds residents.

“These new lights will be much appreciated by a large number of people who walk to and from the Waurn Ponds shops and cinema,” he said.

Along with the lights, a new path with bollard fencing was installed to link the existing asphalt path over the Waurn Ponds Creek bridge to the shopping centre.

The new lights and upgraded path will provide safer and more convenient access, increase the walkability of the area, and decrease the number of cars in the area.

Cr Richards said the foot bridge over the creek will also be upgraded shortly.

"Most ratepayers who live in southern Geelong know that traffic congestion and parking are real problems in the Pioneer Road/ Colac Road area,” he said.

"As the local councillor, I will be lobbying hard to get the walkability of the northern side of Pioneer Road up to scratch so that locals can walk to and from the new LeisureLink and library when they are finished."

“Solar power lights were chosen for the project in accordance with the City’s Greenhouse Response.”

“Our Greenhouse Response is a serious commitment to reduce greenhouse emissions across our many areas of operation.”

“This includes using renewable energy, conserving energy as much as possible, providing carbon offsets and adapting to environmental changes,” said Cr Richards.
