Alcohol and drug information system

Community-based agencies providing specialist alcohol and drug treatment services across the state are funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services. These agencies are required to collect client information entered on a database. In 1996, an interim version of a new system for collection of this information, called the Alcohol and Drug Information System (ADIS) was established, pending the development of a final version of ADIS (implemented from 2000-01). The data presented in this handbook are derived from ADIS-contributing specialist drug and alcohol agencies (including community health centres) in Victoria, with an episode termination date in years 2002-03 to 2004-05. The data are presented with a focus on courses of treatment (COT) and not actual clients. That is, one client may have many courses of treatment. Drug categories examined include: alcohol, heroin, cannabis, psycho-stimulants (amphetamines, ecstasy, cocaine, psychostimulants not further defined) and other drugs (including – analgesics, LSD, stimulants/hallucinogens, caffeine, nicotine, steroids, antidepressants, inhalants; other opioids incorporating opioid analgesics, codeine, morphine, buprenorphine, methadone; and tranquillisers incorporating benzodiazepines, sedatives, hypnotics, and barbiturates). Data is presented as raw numbers and/or proportions. Analysis is conducted on primary drug of concern by age, sex and service type.
