Disability Advisory Committee

The Disability Advisory Committee has an important role advising Council on matters affecting people with disabilities.

The Disability Advisory Committee was set up in 2003 to assist with the development and implementation of the Disability Action Plan.

Twelve community representatives volunteer their time and expertise to ensure our services and facilities are as inclusive as possible.

The committee meets once a month to discuss a full agenda of items with council officers.

Over the past year the committee has had input to many issues including the footpath trading policy, Moorabool Street Bus Exchange and the new stand at Simonds Stadium.

Transport continues to be a priority area. Our submission to the Taxi Industry Inquiry was based on the premise that vulnerable people need to be able to catch any taxi and expect to be conveyed safely to their destination.

The Disability Advisory Committee plays an important role in keeping the issues of access and inclusion at top of mind.

Their expertise and the feedback they provide to different areas of council is a valuable resource in planning and improving services.

Of the current committee 73 per cent are people with experience of living with disability. The remainder are people from a range of professional backgrounds with many years experience in disability access.

The Disability Advisory Committee Terms of Reference contains more information about the role of the committee and how it operates.

Street Access Advisory Group

The Street Access Advisory Group plays an important role in the development of our infrastructure.

Since 2001 the group has provided advice about our streets and footpaths to ensure they are as accessible as possible.

The Street Access Advisory Group meets every six weeks and is made up of council staff, people with disabilities and representatives of disability agencies.

The group has recently had input to a policy about tactile ground surface indicators - making our streets safer for people who are vision impaired.
