Council to advocate for Alcoa jobs

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said that since yesterday’s announcement from Alcoa he had sought appointments with relevant state and federal ministers to discuss the situation in detail.

“We’ve already spoken to state and federal representatives as well as Alcoa senior management and Geelong Trades Hall and are currently lining up appointments with senior federal and state advisers and ministers,” he said

“Our first step is to gather as much information as possible then we’ll convene a round table forum with organisations such as G21, the Geelong Manufacturing Council, the Chamber of Commerce, Trades Hall, local members of parliament and others,” said Mayor Mitchell.

“I would like to convene this forum within the week at which time we will provide an up to date briefing to members of these organisations and then work with them on a strategy aimed at achieving the best possible outcome for Alcoa.

“We are taking a lead role in advocating for Alcoa given the company’s long history in Geelong and the important place it occupies in the regional economy.

“It’s too early to say what the solutions might be but I would like to assure all Alcoa workers and those who rely on them that we will not let any jobs in Geelong go without exploring every avenue possible.

“To this end we will be advocating strongly that both the state and federal governments look closely at programs that can support Alcoa’s Geelong based workforce,” said Mayor Mitchell.
