Description
Thomson is a small suburb just five minutes from the city centre. There are sizeable reserves at the northern and southern edges of the suburb.St Albans reserve, with an oval and tennis courts, adjoins great educational facilities - the East Geelong primary school, a campus of the Gordon TAFE College and the James Harrison Secondary College. In the north, the Thomson Recreation Reserve contains a community centre, a sports club, and a senior citizens' club. Nearby, Tate Street carries one of the suburb's neighbourhood shopping centres. The other is further north at the intersection of St Albans and Breakwater roads.

History
Formerly part of East Geelong, Thomson was named after Geelong's pioneer settler and first mayor, Dr Alexander Thomson. The St. Albans horse-training property was developed during the 1870s not far from the Geelong racecourse and next door to the 1857 St. Albans school. This school later became the East Geelong primary school. The land is now part of Thomson and was given over to schools this century. The East Geelong Technical school was built in 1961. As East Geelong expanded, the land that comprises Thomson, between the Eastern Cemetery and the Geelong racecourse, was developed for housing.
