Location
South Geelong is a residential and industrial area between Geelong city and the Barwon River. It is bordered by the railway line in the north, Kardinia Park in the west and the Barwon River in the south.
Description
The residential area - mostly small cottages, flats and terrace houses - lies downhill from the city centre. Light industry and warehouses fill land to the east and south of Fyans Street. The riverside reserve is home to Landy athletics field and several rowing clubs. The Geelong Indoor Sports Arena is in the south-east of the suburb. Geelong racecourse and the Barwon Valley Golf Club are nearby. And Kardinia Park in the north-west of the suburb, also contains netball courts and a swimming pool. South Geelong has a railway station on the line between Melbourne, Geelong and the Western District. Parts of the suburb are within walking distance of the city centre. Like many inner city suburbs, South Geelong has become more fashionable in recent decades and is ideal for commuters to Melbourne.
History
Kardinia Park, home of the Geelong Football Club since 1940, was originally known as Chilwell Flat. Wasteland was gradually cleaned and made into a park during the 1870s. Its name comes from the grazing property and homestead of Geelong's first settler, Dr Alexander Thomson. South Geelong was established early, being between the city and river. Buildings, churches and some warehouses in South Geelong are on the Victorian Heritage Register.
