Location
Rosewall is a residential suburb 8km north of Geelong on the Princes Highway.
Description
One of Geelong's newest suburbs, Rosewall lies alongside the Princes Highway and not far from Corio railway station, giving it access to Melbourne and the city centre of Geelong. Curved roads and courts give the suburb small neighbourhoods and privacy. Rosewall Primary School and Flinders Park Secondary School provide the suburb with fine educational facilities. Both schools are surrounded by large reserves and to the north of the suburb, Beckley Park contains four of Geelong's special sporting venues. The Geelong Harness Racing Club and the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club hold regular race meetings there. And for children, there is a mini-bike track and a go-kart track on the perimeter of the park. Rosewall is just 45 minutes drive from Melbourne and 10 minutes from Geelong City.
History
The post-war expansion of industry and the demands of immigration led to government-built housing estates. This in turn led to the development of new suburbs in Geelong. The Shire of Corio was a focus for new housing estates and the first homes in Rosewall, at the northern end of Corio, were part of the 'Grandjean Estate' development. The Shell Oil Refinery and private builders added to housing in the suburb, and it grew quickly during the 1970s and 1980s.
