Location
Marshall is an industrial and residential suburb 5km south of Geelong city. It lies between the Barwon River and the Surfcoast Highway.
Description
While nearby Grovedale to the west has expanded, Marshall still contains light industry and many open spaces alongside a growing but small residential population. The Barwon Heads Road runs by the suburb and the Barwon River borders many historic sites - not least among them are the remains of the 1915 sewage aqueduct. The urban centre is near the intersection of Marshalltown and Barwon Heads roads, with a reserve, tennis court and a large retirement village.
History
Marshall, previously called Marshalltown, was part of Breakwater before it gained a separate name. The region was originally the site of tanneries, fellmongeries and animal by-product industries that used the nearby water of the Barwon River. The suburb was named after Thomas Marshall, a wool merchant who established a wool-scouring works near the breakwater during the 1850s. By the early 1900s,Marshall was a small industrial town with a school, a hotel, a post office and an Anglican church. Most residents were employed in local industries.
