Location
Drumcondra is a small inner-city suburb nestled between Geelong city and Rippleside on Corio Bay.

Description
A friendly neighbourhood of about 400 houses, Drumcondra has superb access to the city's best sites and events. The suburb is bordered by Rippleside Park to the north, Corio Bay to the east (for the rising sun), and to the south, the city and Geelong's fine waterfront restaurants. To the west, the highway to Melbourne borders the suburb. The Esplanade at Drumcondra is elevated and affords superb views across the bay. Some of Geelong's most-prized and valuable real estate is located along here. More recently, younger families have moved into what was an established population.

History
One of Geelong's first settlers and pioneer woolbroker, James Strachan, dubbed the estate around his mansion Drumcondra. His mansion, named Lunan House after a property in his Scottish hometown, was built in 1849/50 of Barrabool sandstone. The two-storey edifice is recognised as a fine example of colonial Georgian architecture. Once used as a teachers' college, the property is again a private residence. The big iron gates from the property are now located at the Geelong Grammar School at Corio. Strachan died in 1875. In 1911, subdivision of the estate released residential lots. Drumcondra still boasts some of the most stately waterfront homes in Geelong, along The Esplanade. Seventy-year-old timber cottages, Federation houses, Californian bungalows and later styles line the other 11 streets that make up the compact suburb.
