Location
Curlewis is between Clifton Springs and Leopold on Port Phillip Bay, approximately 15km east of Geelong City.

Description
Today, Curlewis is probably best known for its golf club, an 18-hole course that is possibly the best in the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula district. Housing development has bypassed Curlewis and most residents live on five-acre blocks by dirt roads that run down to the bay. Residents shop in nearby Clifton Springs and Leopold. Undulating land gives fine views across the bay and the shelly beach on the township's foreshore.

History
A Catholic school established in 1850 was the first building in the area formerly known as Point Henry. It was renamed Curlewis in honour of a local pioneer - George Campbell Curlewis - who purchased land there in 1845. A timber church stood next to the school on Portarlington Road but this was replaced by a Gothic-style bluestone and brick structure - the imposing St. Francis Xavier Church. Christies Union Hotel was located on the north side of the Portarlington Road between Christies and Bawtree Roads.
