Baitlayers and Babbling Brooks:
An Exhibition on Australia's Shearers' Cooks

Developed by Shear Outback; The Australian Shearers' Hall of Fame in Hay, NSW, this exhibition explores the history, folklore, stories, characters and recipes of Australia's shearers' cooks, past and present.
'Baitlayer' (also meaning poisoner) is a slang term used for cook and 'Babbling Brooks' is rhyming slang for cooks.
The exhibition explores the conditions of the cookhouse, the life of a shearers' cook and their role in looking after the physical and emotional well being of the shearers, the cooks working today and the type (and quantities!) of food prepared.
There is also an education program
and a school holiday program
attached to this exhibition.
On show now at the National Wool Museum until 13 July.
