Future Management of Solid Waste Materials

The City has commenced a process to determine how all waste generated within the City will be treated in the future.

With the closure of the Corio Landfill site at the end of 2009 and the need for new waste materials processing contracts for residential recyclables and green waste by mid 2010 the City has decided to join with other local Councils and the Barwon Regional Waste Management Group to invite expressions of interest from organisations capable of receiving and processing any or all waste types.

A call for expressions of interest may be viewed in the Tenders section of this web site.

It is envisaged that this process will enable the City to establish waste processing facilities that will continue to promote the best environmental outcome and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, while at least maintaining and hopefully improving the level of service to residents and landfill customers.

The City is taking this action to ensure that residents and businesses continue to have the best possible opportunity to dispose of their waste materials in an environmentally responsible manner.

Through the expression of interest process, the City will be able to identify all options for the future treatment of waste materials before making a decision on which best suits Geelong.
