What is the charge for the three-bin system?
The service charge for 2005/2006 is $166.80. The charge not only includes the three services, but also the maintenance of the three mobile garbage bins. The charge also covers costs associated with keeping the City clean, such as bins in parks, dog poo bins and street sweeping.
I don't have a need for a green waste bin (I compost, I do not have any garden, I live on a rural property).
Removal of green waste material is particularly important as this makes up 30% of all household waste. Green waste placed in landfill contributes to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The standard three-bin service is provided to all households to cater for future changes in property occupancy. In the future, it is planned to allow organic scraps - vegetable and fruit peels - to be placed in your green waste bin.
What do I do with my old bin?
You can keep your old bin for storage and composting. It can also be used as a garden tool holder or a wheelbarrow (if it has wheels).
I do not have room to store my three bins.
Your three bins do not need to be stored undercover and can be placed anywhere in your yard. They are weather and fly proof. If you are in a flat or unit and space is a problem, you may share bins with other units or have smaller bins.
I have a holiday house and only visit on weekends. How do I place my bins out for collection?
Residents in coastal areas who are not at their property at the time of normal kerbside collection, may take their household garbage and recycling to special drop off points in Barwon Heads or Drysdale. Residents can place their household garbage and or recycling in the respective mobile bins at these drop off points:
-APCO Service Station, Geelong Road, Barwon Heads
-Mortimer Service Station, High Street, Drysdale
Will I still be able to home compost?
Yes. Home composting is promoted.
I have six or more people in my house. Can I have an extra garbage bin?
Yes, at no cost. Simply call Customer Service on 5227 0270. They will send you a form to complete and return to the City.
