Right from the start the beauty of Geelong and the attraction of its position drew settlers from all locations and walks of life, culminating in a diverse mixture of nationalities, customs, culture and architecture.

Today, a reasonable amount of Geelong&s built and natural heritage remains. With appropriate Council actions, they will survive for future generations of Australians to view, understand and appreciate.

The City is working to ensure that the region&s significant buildings and historic areas survive to be used and enjoyed by its residents and visitors today and tomorrow. Heritage Studies of the area have been undertaken to identify and document buildings and areas of historical and cultural significance worthy of protection for current and future generations.

The City has a Heritage Advisory Service to assist owner of Heritage buildings in making informed decisions about restoration, maintenance, alterations and additions to their place. The service is available to owners where a planning permit is required under the Heritage Overlay. Contact Council on (03) 5227 0270 if you require further assistance.
