SEPTIC TANK INFORMATION

It is important for the home owner and the plumber to discuss all of the options available before the application is made to ensure that the siting of the septic system does not detrimentally effect the environment, neighbouring properties or the intended use of the land. A permit must be obtained from Council's Environmental Health Department.

The Septic Tank Permit Process Overview

Step 1
If you are wishing to carry out alterations to an existing system or upgrade go to Step 2.

When building a new dwelling a 'Consent to Install a Septic Tank System' must be obtained by the Building Surveyor supervising the development in accordance with the Building Act. A determination will be made as to the suitability of the site to effectively dispose of the effluent. At this stage a Health Officer will carry out a Site Inspection.

Step 2
A Septic Tank Installation/Alteration Application must be completed, paid and lodged with our department.  Plans must be submitted in accordance with the requirements on the application form.

Step 3
As the plumber is the applicant on the owners behalf, if there are any issues with the application an Environmental Health Officer will advise the plumber.  Once any issues are rectified, the Approval to Install a Septic System will be issued.

Step 4
Whilst the septic system and irrigation lines are being installed an open inspection is carried out by an Environmental Health Officer.

Step 5
Once the Septic System has been installed and the system is workking a final inspection is carried out by an Environmental Health Officer.  It should be noted that a final inspection needs to be carried out before the Certicate of Occupancy will be issued by the Building Department.  Once the final inspection is carried out and there are no issues an Approval to Use Certificate will be issued.
