Site 3 - Ocean Grove
Ocean Grove township, due to its location, is surrounded by vast wetlands as part of the Lake Connewarre State Game Reserve. In excess of 200 hectares of wetlands are subject to tidal and rainfall events causing these areas to become ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes. Most of these areas are along the higher edges of the tidal wetlands and extend from the edge of the golf club, along Thacker Street wetlands, around Paceys Island and back to the eastern edge of Lake Connewarre, then through to the Lings Road wetlands in Wallington. Due to the size and potential that these wetlands have, in terms of the impact of airborne mosquitoes around the township, prompt regular monitoring and treatment of these areas occurs after each high tide and/or rainfall event. These wetlands also impact on the Barwon Heads township and likewise, some of the wetlands and marshes around Barwon Heads can impact on Ocean Grove.
The predominant species in Ocean Grove is the saltmarsh mosquito, Ochlerotatus camptorhyncus, which is an aggressive day and night biter. Freshwater mosquitoes are at times observed, most of which would eminate from domestic environments as well as pits and drains around the township.
