The City's mosquito control contractors have been busy monitoring and treating areas around the municipality in the past fortnight. Areas around Geelong that have shown high larvae levels include:
Leopold- Reedy Lake Periphery
St Leonards- Cliff St and Swan Bay, including Pt Edwards Reserve
Breamlea Saltmarshes
Barwon Heads- Stacey's Rd near Lake Connewarre
These areas and sites around Wallington, Ocean Grove, and Pt Henry have been treated for mosquito larvae by helicopter. The mosquito control products used in aerial spraying are larvicides called Bacillus thuringiensis isralensis (Bti) and s-Methoprene. These products only affect mosquito larvae. People, other animals, and the general environment will not be adversely affected by the aerial treatments.
The contractors have also treated areas that are not accessible by helicopter, including the St Leonards Lake and drainage around Leopold, Moolap, Lara, Queenscliffe, Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove.
