The adverse health effects of exposure to asbestos result from inhalation and retention of the asbestos fibres. As the level of exposure that may cause health effects is not known, exposure to asbestos fibres and dust should be kept to a minimum.
The risk of contracting asbestos related disease is related to the level of exposure, both duration of time and the number of particles inhaled and retained. Asbestos-related disease is usually associated with long-term exposure to asbestos in an occupational setting.
Diseases caused by asbestos include Asbestosis, Lung cancer and Mesothelioma (cancer of the gut lining).
