IntroductionVictoria supports an abundant and diverse array of native animals. Unfortunately, more than 150 of these species are classified as threatened or endangered under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act 1988.

Significant fauna in the Geelong region
The Geelong region supports a wide variety of native animals. Those listed in the Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act 1988 include the Grassland Earless Dragon, Hooded Plover and Brushed-tail Phascogale. The region also provides an important habitat for the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot, of which there are only 200 individuals left.
The Barwon River contains 12 species of native fish (Corangamite Catchment and Land Protection Board, 1997) and 6 of these have been recorded in the Geelong region (Atlas of Victorian Wildlife, Department of Natural Resources and Environment).
Migratory birds utilise Geelong&s internationally important Ramsar wetlands for breeding and feeding.
