The City has a formal Friendship relationship with the District of Viqueque 195 km outside Dili. A memorandum of understanding was signed in September 2004.
 
The Geelong East Timor friendship committee is made up of community organisations across Geelong working to support and build friendships with the people of East Timor.
 

The role of this Committee is to act as a conduit for Geelong residents and groups who wish to initiate activities to support the Viqueque community.
 
The community groups represented on the committee are the leaders and organisers of some projects run by their individual clubs. This committee may support the project in principle and act as a coordinator and disseminator of information.
 
One of the major roles of this group is to raise awareness within the Geelong community of projects and events being initiated by Geelong residents for the communities of East Timor.
