Family Day Care
 What is Family Day Care?

Family Day Care (FDC) is an approved and accredited home based child care service for children aged between birth and 12 years of age. It is operated by the City of Greater Geelong, and funded by the Australian Government.
 
The scheme is co-ordinated and monitored by a central co-ordination unit.
 
FDC provides a safe, secure, caring home environment. Adiverse range of environments and activities are provided. The service can be flexible and aims to meet the individual needs of families.
 
The FDC service operates in accordance with National FDC standards, Accreditation standards and AustralianGovernment guidelines for FamilyDay Care.
 

 What skills & qualities do I need to have?
  • flexibility, creativeness, commitment and an understanding of the developmental needs of children
  • ability to understand and comply with policy and procedure
  • ability to develop and maintain a professional trusting relationship with children and families using care
  • ability to respond to ongoing support and direction from the scheme
  • willingness to participate in professional development and scheme activities
  • ability to provide a clean, safe,secure and stimulating environment for children.
 Do I need formal child carequalifications?

Child care qualifications and experience are preferred, butnot a requirement.
 

 Will I be employed by Council?

Care Providers are

  • registered with the City of Greater Geelong to provide home based child care, and are therefore not employees of council
  • required to keep information on income/expenditure for tax purposes
  • required to obtain an Australian Business Number(ABN) prior to registration.
 How many children can I care for?
State regulations allow for up to four children not attending school, and three attending school, with a maximum of seven children at any one time (including the Care Provider's own children).
 
 What is the selection criteria?
  • knowledge of child development
  • appropriate occupational health and safety practices
  • appropriate health and hygiene practices
  • literacy and numeracy skills
  • knowledge in nutritional needs of children
  • lnterpersonal and communication skills
  • ability to comply with relevant policy and procedure
  • suitable environment for children.
 Other requirements
  • current first aid certificate (equivalent to Level 2),emergency asthmamanagement (3 yearly) and annual CPR must be maintained
  • personal Public Liability Insurance.

You will be invited to attend an informal information session after which you may choose to complete an application.
 
 What is the process?

  • reference checks
  • medical check
  • vehicle restraint check.

Once registered, an orientationsession will be conducted.
 

 How long will the process take?
Generally up to six weeks from time of application, dependant on completion of requirements.
