Toni Jordan

The Geelong Regional Library Corporation and Books Alive 2008 proudly present an author event with two of Australia's finest authors - Debra Adelaide and Toni Jordan.

The evening promises to be both enlightening and entertaining.  It will be 'a slice of life' as we move from subjects changing from compulsiveness to dying and what makes a novel the Australian novel of the year.

Toni Jordan has worked in a variety of positions until an early mid-life crisis, changed her direction from the vitamin industry to being enrolled in RMIT's Professional Writing and Editing course with the idea of starting her own writing business.  She needed one more subject, so she picked Novel - and in 2006 won a Varuna Awards master class to develop her debut novel, 'Addition'.  It is the story of Grace, a woman whose obsession with numbers and counting things (letters in a name, poppy seeds in a piece of cake) seriously affects how she lives. Addition will stay with you long after you've read the final page.

Debra Adelaide is the author of two novels, The Hotel Albatross and Serpent Dust, and the editor of four themed collections of fiction and memoirs, the latest of which is Acts of Dog.  Debra will enlighten the audience with her perceptions on life and why this novel has taken Australia by storm.  'The Household Guide to Dying' is a brilliantly moving and darkly comic novel, which charts the attempts of dying heroine Delia a modern day Mrs. Beeton to prepare her family for the future and lay to rest a ghost from her past.  There are things Delia must do, wrongs to be put right but so little time and being Delia things have to be done in a delightfully eccentric way.

Books Alive is a national campaign that runs each year for 5 weeks to promote the love of reading. The '50 Books You Can't Put Down' guide has been distributed nationally to libraries and booksellers. This year the ambassador for Books Alive is Michael Robotham.  His latest adult action thriller 'Bombproof', especially commissioned for the campaign, will be available exclusively for free with any book purchased from '50 Books You Can't Put Down.

Times of My Life - Story of a Life Well Worth T
elling
Times of My Life, a new play by Tony Sheldon and Toni Lamond, is more than a history of Australian showbiz - it is a candid yet humorous autobiographical story of Lamond's life in the entertainment world with music, song and dialogue that is honest and inspirational.  The shy little girl with greasepaint coursing through her veins grew into one of the jewels of Australian entertainment becoming the first woman in the world to host her own television show.  Co-written with her son, Tony Sheldon, this is a personal and touching story.  With rich and illuminating archival footage punctuating the show, Lamond's anecdotes, observations and experiences are testament to her legend of perfect comedy timing.  Sheldon and Lamond have crafted a play populated with scenes and people from an extraordinary life.  In conjunction with Times of My Life's Geelong season, Geelong Performing Arts Centre is proud to present the 'Lady In Lights' exhibition, a tribute to the amazing career of Toni Lamond, brought to you by the Performing Arts Museum, The Arts Centre, Melbourne.  The exhibition features never-before-seen photos from her private collection, plus her numerous awards and production shots from stage, film and television appearances.

The Lightkeeper and Art Exhibition.

The Lightkeeper by Verity Laughton won the AWGIE award for best play 2004.  It tells the story of the many real-life adventures that took place along the ship wreck coast of Australia, weaving them around the character of Jack Power [Rob MacLeod] a seaman turned lightkeeper.  The Lightkeeper is also the story of Jack's love for Mary Agnes Taylor, the widow he marries and takes to the lighthouse with her small son.  The play deals with powerful themes of love, isolation and a brooding sense of loss, set in a space that is beyond time.  The Art Exhibition, Curator Gillian Turner features some of our most talented artists from our area.  This exhibition is part of the event and can be viewed before and after the performance.  It will also be available to visit for the week of the show in the foyer of the Potato Shed Drysdale.

Ruby Moon
What happens when a child goes missing?  What does a parent do when their worst nightmare comes true, their silent cries of ‘surely not mine' go unanswered, and all their desperate searching is in vain?  How to cling to hope, how to fight despair?  How do you even hold on to sanity and each other?  Ruby Moon walks the footpaths of our great, disconnected Australian suburbia in the wake of the disappearance of Ruby, a 10-year-old girl who went to visit her grandma one day and never came back.  Since then, Ruby's parents have been trying to pick up the pieces and fit them together into something that looks like Ruby.  Ruby Moon is a powerful, grimly comic vision of the agony that is Gretel, Azaria, little Maddie and all the missing children.  Doug Mann, directing this production for Geelong Repertory, was excited at the depth of talent which presented for Ruby Moon auditions.  It's not surprising that this play would appeal to the best actors in Geelong.  For an actor it presents an amazing challenge: ninety unbroken minutes on stage for two actors, playing a total of nine different characters.  It is an audacious feat of concentration and diversity to which only the best could do justice.  In Cherie Mills and Sascha Keet, Doug has two performers with impeccable theatrical credits, from Shakespeare to Wilde to musicals and modern Australian drama.
