Arts Bulletin 284 17 July 2008
This Week's Feature - Memory Bank |

| Memories of our local places are told through film, audio and photographs in a revealing exhibition opening next week at the National Wool Museum.
The Memory Bank exhibition has been created by award-winning digital filmmaker Malcolm McKinnon, who for the past six months has been gathering stories from across the Geelong region.
This multi-media collection of people's stories reflects personal connections to local places. Also featured are objects and artefacts from people's lives representing special memories.
Walk the installation by artist Glenn Romanis. Walking Country is a bird's-eye view of Geelong in sand, stone and wood, from the mouth of the Barwon to the You Yangs.
On exhibition for the first time are works of art by local sculptors Julie Shaw, Victoria Edgar and Mark Trinham. All have been working with the Barwon Heads, Botanic Gardens and Norlane/Corio communities respectively to create sculptures iconic of these places.
On opening night only, Events Director Donna Jackson, has chosen a selection of memories to freeze in ice - objects frozen temporarily to be discovered by some and remembered by others. Artefacts from times and places that may no longer exist - a child's chair from Morongo College, a beaded handbag from the heyday of the Palais Royal, a bridle from a childhood of riding on Fyansford Common.
To experience all the ooh aah of this exhibition, Arts Bulletin readers should RSVP for the opening event - but do it quickly because the close off is tomorrow. Opening:
| Dates: | 24 July 2008 (RSVP essential by 18 July) | | Time: | 6pm to 7.30pm |

| Performing Arts | The Pitch Shaken+stirred @ THE BLAKI!, Geelong Performing Arts Centre's winter series of four very different shows in the intimate surrounds of the Blakiston Theatre, continues with The Pitch, a hilarious satire depicting the trials and tribulations of trying to crack the big time in Hollywood. Peter Houghton's brilliant show was a critically acclaimed hit in Melbourne in 2006 and 2007 and was awarded two prestigious Green Room Awards, for Performance and for Best New Play. The Pitch is set in the very humble apartment of aspiring screenwriter Walter Weinerman just before he is about to sell his screenplay to an all-powerful Hollywood film industry panel. The play is an hilarious antidote for the many clichéd and over done Hollywood blockbusters that we are all too familiar with.

| Visual Arts | GEELONG GALLERY - Multiple Listings Land Marks: Beyond The Surface - David Beaumont Land Marks: Beyond the surface is an exhibition of paintings inspired by the beauty and harshness of the Australian landscape and in particular the surface of the land at Lake Mungo, the Gammon Ranges, Pink Lakes and Lake Eyre. Sketching trips to these inland locations have been the starting point for this new body of work that marks a shift in David Beaumont's practice from the coastal seascapes for which he is well-known. Sections of thickly applied paint that rise from the surface of the canvas are juxtaposed with pared-back, almost transparent finishes, replicating the nuances of the landscape when closely observed. Beaumont's works invite considered observation and encourage the viewer to look 'beyond the surface' - to reveal the various layers of both his paintings and, more broadly, the Australian landscape in general. Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking This exhibition brings together works by European and British master printmakers Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Thomas Bewick, Charles Meryon and James McNeill Whistler, with related images by Australian artists - past and present - such as Lionel Lindsay, John Shirlow, Jessie Traill, Rosalind Atkins and Marco Luccio, as a means of illustrating the different streams of influence that have contributed to the notably rich tradition of printmaking in Australia. Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking presents works from Geelong Gallery's outstanding print collection alongside those from private and institutional collections including the Art Gallery of South Australia, Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria.
