Arts Bulletin 283 10 July 2008
This Week's Feature - Sonoka Miyake - Piano Recital | Sonoka Miyake
Sonoka Miyake | Sonoka Miyake is well known in Geelong music circles as a talented accompanist and associate artist and has made a great contribution to music in Geelong. Sonoka was born in Chiba, Japan. She came to Hobart as an exchange student for secondary school education and studied music at the University of Tasmania where she completed her Bachelor and Graduate Diploma of Music at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music under the direction of Beryl Sedivka.
She performed many concerts in Tasmania and in Victoria including, Mozart Piano Concerto No. 11 with Tasmanian Chamber Players, Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 with Derwent Symphony Orchestra and Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 with Tasmanian Conservatorium Orchestra. Sonoka was recorded and broadcasted by ABC Classic FM as part of the Young Australia Program in 1997.
In 2004 she appeared in a concert giving the premier performance of a Piano Concertino by Dr Malcolm John. During the celebration of 250 years of Mozart in 2006 she played a Sonata at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre Mozart variety concert. Since then concert goers in Geelong will have seen and heard Sonoka in a myriad of events as performer, associate artist and accompanist.
Sonoka teaches piano at Geelong Grammar School and is a widely known and sought after accompanist. She plays for The Geelong Chorale and numerous other arts organisations. She is also currently an accompanist for the St Paul's Occasional Choir and enjoys playing with the Geelong based chamber group Arts Illumini.
Sonoka is currently studying piano with Anthony Halliday, international concert pianist and organist. She is also studying organ with Dion Henman, assistant organist at St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, and is occasional organist at St Paul's Church, Geelong.
This recital will be played on a magnificent Boesendorfer grand piano in the wonderful acoustics of St Paul's Geelong. The program is an exciting variety of composers including Beethoven, Chopin, Scarlatti, Debussy and Tchaikovsky. Sonoka has a busy schedule playing as an accompanist and an associate artist that it can be difficult to find time to prepare for a solo recital so this is a very special treat and a rare opportunity to hear her play solo and appreciate her obvious talent and mastery.

| Performing Arts | The Little Prince - For Little Kids Encore 4 Kids Theatre Company invites you on a magical journey into the world of The Little Prince - live on stage these school holidays at the Potato Shed. This production is designed as an introduction to the classic book by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, presented in a colourful and comical live production. The story and the message of The Little Prince is timeless, beautiful and significant. The beautiful Rose tells why the little prince left his planet, his three volcanos, and why he wishes to travel through the universe. We follow his journey as he encounters some very interesting characters. Meet the king, the conceited man, the businessman, the lamplighter, the geographer, the snake and the fox - all have lessons to teach the little prince and the audience. With some catchy songs and colourful characters this is a show not too miss! The story of The Little Prince is for everyone - every word has meaning and every character shows us an insight into human nature. We often forget what is important in life; we get caught up in matters of consequence. Take some time out and revisit the joy and innocence of The Little Prince. Tickets at the door or credit card bookings by phone or book at any City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre.

Peter Houghton's brilliant show was a critically acclaimed hit in Melbourne in 2006 and 2007 and was awarded two prestigious Green Room Awards, for Performance and for Best New Play. The Pitch is set in the very humble apartment of aspiring screenwriter Walter Weinerman just before he is about to sell his screenplay to an all-powerful Hollywood film industry panel. The play is an hilarious antidote for the many clichéd and over done Hollywood blockbusters that we are all too familiar with.

| Visual Arts | GEELONG GALLERY - Multiple Listings Land Marks: Beyond The Surface - David Beaumont Land Marks: Beyond the surface is an exhibition of paintings inspired by the beauty and harshness of the Australian landscape and in particular the surface of the land at Lake Mungo, the Gammon Ranges, Pink Lakes and Lake Eyre. Sketching trips to these inland locations have been the starting point for this new body of work that marks a shift in David Beaumont's practice from the coastal seascapes for which he is well-known. Sections of thickly applied paint that rise from the surface of the canvas are juxtaposed with pared-back, almost transparent finishes, replicating the nuances of the landscape when closely observed. Beaumont's works invite considered observation and encourage the viewer to look 'beyond the surface' - to reveal the various layers of both his paintings and, more broadly, the Australian landscape in general. Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking This exhibition brings together works by European and British master printmakers Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Thomas Bewick, Charles Meryon and James McNeill Whistler, with related images by Australian artists - past and present - such as Lionel Lindsay, John Shirlow, Jessie Traill, Rosalind Atkins and Marco Luccio, as a means of illustrating the different streams of influence that have contributed to the notably rich tradition of printmaking in Australia. Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking presents works from Geelong Gallery's outstanding print collection alongside those from private and institutional collections including the Art Gallery of South Australia, Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria.
