This Week's Feature - NAIDOC Exhibition -
White and Black in Black and White
NAIDOC1

NAIDOC3

NAIDOC4

Interpretations of the 2008 NAIDOC Week theme, Advance Australia Fair? will be showcased at an exhibition at the Gordon Gallery this month.

Each year in celebrations of NAIDOC Week Kitjarra Wurrun-ngeen (the Indigenous Education Unit at the Gordon Institute of TAFE) invites local Aboriginal artists, Aboriginal art students, staff, students and artists from the wider Geelong community to submit work for the annual NAIDOC art exhibition at the gallery.  The Gordon Institute of TAFE is delighted to feature selected works created by students from the Yeye-Dyeelee (To Dream) Digital Photography Class and the Wathaurong Youth Education Class.

NAIDOC celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia.  All Australians are encouraged to participate in NAIDOC Week activities during July 6 to 13.  The acronym originally stood for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.

To mark NAIDOC Week celebrations this year the National NAIDOC Committee has selected the theme: Advance Australia Fair?

The aim of the theme this year is to encourage people to reflect on the Australian principle of a fair go and for them to consider the inequalities still experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country today.

The theme also lays down the challenge to the new Labor Government to deliver real change and improvements in the lives of Aboriginal people.  This year's exhibition title White and Black in Black and White is born from the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd's, historical apology motion tabled in parliament on February 13 2008:  "We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation. For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.  We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians."

NAIDOC organiser Judith Shea said: "For us to work together we need to acknowledge the past, share in understanding the present and journey together for the future."

Shaken+Stirred @ The Blaki! Heats Up With Glow
Shaken+stirred @ THE BLAKI!,
GPAC's winter series of four very different shows, continues in July with another exceptional event to warm your imagination and dazzle your senses.  Following the great success of our first show, The Needle and the Damage Done in June, the series continues with Glow, an illuminating fusion of video and dance by Chunky Move Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek and interactive software creator Frieder Weiss.  Utilising the latest in interactive video technologies a digital landscape is generated in real time in response to the dancer's movement. The body's gestures are extended by and in turn manipulate the video world that surrounds it, rendering no two performances exactly the same.  Witness this melding of technology and the human form in the intimate surrounds of the Blakiston Theatre.  Prepare to get up close and personal with Glow - part of the shaken+stirred @ THE BLAKI! series.

The Little Prince - For Little Kids
Encore 4 Kids Theatre Company invites you on a magical journey into the world of The Little Prince - live on stage these school holidays at the Potato Shed.  This production is designed as an introduction to the classic book by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, presented in a colourful and comical live production.  The story and the message of The Little Prince is timeless, beautiful and significant.  The beautiful Rose tells why the little prince left his planet, his three volcanos, and why he wishes to travel through the universe.  We follow his journey as he encounters some very interesting characters.  Meet the king, the conceited man, the businessman, the lamplighter, the geographer, the snake and the fox - all have lessons to teach the little prince and the audience.  With some catchy songs and colourful characters this is a show not too miss!  The story of The Little Prince is for everyone - every word has meaning and every character shows us an insight into human nature.  We often forget what is important in life; we get caught up in matters of consequence.  Take some time out and revisit the joy and innocence of The Little Prince.  Tickets at the door or credit card bookings by phone or book at any City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre.

Land Marks: Beyond The Surface - David Beaumont

Land Marks: Beyond the surface is an exhibition of paintings inspired by the beauty and harshness of the Australian landscape and in particular the surface of the land at Lake Mungo, the Gammon Ranges, Pink Lakes and Lake Eyre.  Sketching trips to these inland locations have been the starting point for this new body of work that marks a shift in David Beaumont's practice from the coastal seascapes for which he is well-known.  Sections of thickly applied paint that rise from the surface of the canvas are juxtaposed with pared-back, almost transparent finishes, replicating the nuances of the landscape when closely observed.  Beaumont's works invite considered observation and encourage the viewer to look 'beyond the surface' - to reveal the various layers of both his paintings and, more broadly, the Australian landscape in general.

Dates:To 20 July 2008

Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking
This exhibition brings together works by European and British master printmakers Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Thomas Bewick, Charles Meryon and James McNeill Whistler, with related images by Australian artists - past and present - such as Lionel Lindsay, John Shirlow, Jessie Traill, Rosalind Atkins and Marco Luccio, as a means of illustrating the different streams of influence that have contributed to the notably rich tradition of printmaking in Australia.  Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking presents works from Geelong Gallery's outstanding print collection alongside those from private and institutional collections including the Art Gallery of South Australia, Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria.

2008 Bethany Arthouse Film Festival - Black Book
Black Book
is the third film of five in this year's Bethany Arthouse Film Festival. The final years of the Second World War finds Rachel Stein taking refuge in rural Holland.  Along with other Jews she is promised an escape into Allied territory with her family but they are ambushed and her family are murdered.  Embittered by the memory of the murder, Rachel decides to become a Dutch resistance fighter to seek revenge against the Nazis.  This Dutch film with English subtitles was selected for both the 2006 Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.  The Arthouse Film Festival raises vital funds for Bethany and is a great way of helping this organisation to support those most in need in our community.

Artist of the Month - Roger Heagney
person
Roger Heagney

Basilica
The Basilica of St Mary of the Angels

Roger Heagney is returning to Geelong to give a harpsichord recital, A Winter Tapestry, in the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels.  Roger is well-known in Geelong, having been brought up in this city where he attended St Joseph's College.  His wife, Margaret, is also a local girl, formerly Margaret Flanagan.

Roger began his career in Geelong and many readers will remember him as a young organist and choirmaster at St Peter and Paul's Church in Mercer Street.  From there his career rose steadily and Roger is now internationally recognized as a performer on piano, organ and harpsichord, and as composer, lecturer, recording artist, arranger of orchestral works and conductor.  He was Director of Music at St Francis' Church in Melbourne for many years and conductor of the choir, taking it on two international tours and making a number of recordings.  Roger was awarded by Pope John Paul II for his services to church music with the title of Knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great.  The OAM was bestowed on him by the by the Australian Government for his services to music and his contribution to Australian Catholic University has been invaluable.

This is a rare opportunity to hear a harpsichord recital in Geelong from one of Australia's finest exponents of this instrument, an eagerly sought international artist and a highly respected teacher with family links and a loyal following in Geelong.  The harpsichord is heard in Geelong occasionally, usually as part of an ensemble or as a featured instrument in a broader setting.  However, Roger's performance is a dedicated harpsichord recital and that makes it special and different.  Roger will set the music of composers such as Scarlatti, Haydn, Couperin and Bach free into the wonderful acoustics of the Basilica.  It will be an inspiring experience.
