Arts Bulletin 281 26 June 2008
This Week's Feature - Cloudstreet | Lauren O'Callaghan and Scott Beaton
Chris Young, Stephen Simpson and Colin Urquhart
Travis Eccles, Mary Steuten, Chris Young and Colin Urquhart | Geelong Repertory Theatre Company is very excited to be bringing Tim Winton's masterpiece, Cloudstreet, to the stage as a part of their 2008 season. This adaptation of the book, by Nick Enright and Justin Monjo, has played to rave reviews around the world since its first production in Sydney in 1998 but this is one of the first non-professional productions in Victoria.
Director, Mike Ellis, has assembled an outstanding cast of Rep regulars and newcomers to breathe life into this story of two families, forced through circumstances to share a shuddering old house at Number One Cloudstreet. Over the course of twenty years they learn to share the joys and pain of life together. Their lives are touched by tragedy but through humour and love they rise above their troubles and reach a point of acceptance, comfort and peace. They realise that a house should be a home, a privilege, not a possession.
We follow the story of the Lamb family on one side of the house, simple and religious, who share a strong bond common to large families of the time. Fish Lamb, injured in a swimming accident, and his brother Quick share a magic relationship that transports them to a mysterious place neither of them really understands. On the other side of the house, the Pickles family are a very different kettle of fish. Rose Pickles watches enviously as each family meets the challenges of life.
Included in the cast are Colin Urquhart, Mary Steuten, Glenda Maddison, Scott Beaton, Stephen Simpson, Chris Young, Lauren O'Callaghan, Lachlan Murphy, Charlotte Hukvari, Rebecca Bennett, Deb Welsh, Travis Eccles, Nick Frcek and Barry Eeles.
Cloudstreet is a huge, rambling story and for this reason performances will commence at 7pm (or 1pm for the matinee) as the plays runs for about four hours (including intervals).

| Visual Arts | ARQ GALLERY Celtic Mandala This exhibition features local Geelong artist June Ferndale and her exquisite acrylic paintings of Celtic Mandalas. This is June's first exhibition. The Mandala, meaning circle, is used in many ancient cultures such as that of the Tibetan Monks and the Navaho Indians, and they are also used in Jungian psychology. Painting the Mandala creates a feeling of wholeness and oneness. The uplifting work of June Ferndale is done on small canvases with fabulous bright colours incorporating themes of love, joy and peace and some traditional symbols including the painstaking Celtic knot and animals such as the dragon, seahorse and boar.

GEELONG GALLERY - Multiple Listings Land Marks: Beyond The Surface - David Beaumont Land Marks: Beyond the surface is an exhibition of paintings inspired by the beauty and harshness of the Australian landscape and in particular the surface of the land at Lake Mungo, the Gammon Ranges, Pink Lakes and Lake Eyre. Sketching trips to these inland locations have been the starting point for this new body of work that marks a shift in David Beaumont's practice from the coastal seascapes for which he is well-known. Sections of thickly applied paint that rise from the surface of the canvas are juxtaposed with pared-back, almost transparent finishes, replicating the nuances of the landscape when closely observed. Beaumont's works invite considered observation and encourage the viewer to look 'beyond the surface' - to reveal the various layers of both his paintings and, more broadly, the Australian landscape in general.
Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking This exhibition brings together works by European and British master printmakers Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Thomas Bewick, Charles Meryon and James McNeill Whistler, with related images by Australian artists - past and present - such as Lionel Lindsay, John Shirlow, Jessie Traill, Rosalind Atkins and Marco Luccio, as a means of illustrating the different streams of influence that have contributed to the notably rich tradition of printmaking in Australia. Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking presents works from Geelong Gallery's outstanding print collection alongside those from private and institutional collections including the Art Gallery of South Australia, Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria.

This exhibition of energetic, expressive watercolours and oil paintings will include many fine works based on the Geelong region and beyond, and if you were lucky you may have caught them painting on site at the waterfront recently! Be quick.

| Festivals and Events | Barwon Heads Film Society Inc.
