Arts Bulletin 280 19 June 2008
This Week's Feature - Prepare to be Shaken + Stirred @ The Blaki! | The Needle and the Damage Done
 Glow
 The Pitch
The Burlesque Hour | This winter, in the intimate surrounds of Geelong Performing Arts Centre's Blakiston Theatre, warm your imagination and dazzle your senses with Shaken + Stirred @ The Blaki, a series of four shows that are a little ... left of centre.
Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) is excited at the prospect of adding something different to an already diverse array of offerings.
The first of the four cutting edge shows is The Needle and the Damage Done (19 to 21 June), a 70 minute solo comedy/cabaret show that's a joyous romp through a top ten of the worst records ever released in the history of the world. Written and performed by stand-up comic, journalist, satirist, radio broadcaster and deejay Fiona Scott-Norman.
Next up is Glow (3 to 5 July), an illuminating choreographic essay by Chunky Move Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek and interactive software creator Frieder Weiss. Beneath the Glow of a sophisticated video tracking system, a lone organic being transforms in and out of sensual states. Utilising the latest in interactive video technologies a digital landscape is generated in real time in response to the dancer's movement.
The Pitch (17 to 19 July) is a hilarious satire about the trials and tribulations of trying to crack the big time in Hollywood. Peter Houghton's brilliant show is set in the very humble apartment of aspiring screenwriter Walter Weinerman just before he is about to sell his screenplay - an action, mystery, revenge, loser-makes-good, romance film set in way too many exotic locations - to an all-powerful Hollywood film industry panel.
Closing the series will be The Burlesque Hour (31 July to 2 August), a lush velvet-trimmed salon where vaudeville and variety, circus and sideshow, striptease and cartoon strip, boho and butoh, music hall, monologue and mayhem are hijacked by astonishing performance art divas: the Mistress of Grand Guignol Moira Finucane; Moscow Circus trained circus and burlesque star Azaria Universe; Japanese butoh dancer and shock cabaret artiste Yumi Umiumare; and the legendary iconoclast Maude Davey with her infamous and fabled strawberry act. Join them as they mix it up with luminous guest artistes...your table awaits.
GPAC is very proud to be bringing this program of cutting edge productions to Geelong, and really hope people take the opportunity to sample something new.
GPAC invites you to get up close and personal with Shaken + Stirred @ The Blaki - four very different shows in the Blakiston Theatre.

| Performing Arts | *TONIGHT* Sportsman's Night Sportsman's Night, written and performed by award wining comedian Damian Callinan, exposes life in a country town where footy rules all. Bodgy Creek is a town that has seen better days. The population is dwindling; the local timber industry is under threat; and now to top it all off the footy club, The Bodgy Creek Roosters, has been banned for their involvement in a 'harmless melee'! This riotous and energetic one man comedy, inspired by the real life events of a country footy club banned for a melee that got out of hand, is bound to be hit in our football loving city. *NEW* Cloudstreet - Geelong Premiere Geelong Repertory Theatre Company's 2008 season continues with Cloudstreet, adapted from the Tim Winton novel by Nick Enright and Justin Monjo. Number One Cloudstreet is a great shuddering joint shared by two very different families who, over a period of twenty odd years, learn to live and love together in eventual harmony. Directed by Mike Ellis (Stories from Suburban Road, The Laramie Project, Good Works), the cast includes Rep favourites Stephen Simpson, Scott Beaton, Barry Eeles, Rebecca Bennett, Lachlan Murphy and Travis Eccles; relative newcomers Chris Young, Charlotte Hukvari, Deb Welsh and Colin Urquhart and newcomers to Rep, Glenda Maddison, Mary Steuten, Lauren O'Callaghan and Nick Frcek. Tim Winton is one of Australia's most loved writers and Cloudstreet is generally regarded as his masterpiece. The story captures the Australia of a bygone age and is riddled with magic. A theatrical experience not to be missed.

Ajak Kwai brings an exciting African vocal style and repertoire, with a contemporary treatment by the drummer and guitarist who perform with her. As a child, she absorbed the music culture of her Dinka village in southern Sudan. She sings the traditional songs of her heritage as well as reflecting on issues of life in the 21st Century. Ever since her arrival in Australia in 1999 under the UN Humanitarian Aid program, Ajak has worked with a number of ensembles and as a soloist. She has produced two CDs and built up a strong following wherever she has performed. She is a thoroughly engaging artist with a compelling vocal style and a delightful sense of the absurd. Ajak has seen much of life - much suffering and much affection. It's all good material for a songwriter. Tickets for the concert are available from Torquay Health Foods, Gilbert Street, Torquay, or at the door. Also, a two course lunch is available at noon at The Rose for $30. Lunch bookings are essential.

They're annoyed with the commercialisation of life; with Indian call centres; with the rubbish on TV; and with what council's doing to the Gheringhap Street roundabout, and they're particularly scathing about modern music. So they've invited some friends to sing songs like they should be sung - with proper tunes - and you can understand the words! Warning, this show contains grumpy old songs, sketches and jokes. *NEW* Blank Canvas Collision Dance is proud to present their latest original contemporary dance work Blank Canvas - a unique dance event to help raise funds for a quadriplegic teen. The work explores the colour, texture and inspiration behind creating a piece of art work. | Visual Arts | ARQ GALLERY Celtic Mandala This exhibition features local Geelong artist June Ferndale and her exquisite acrylic paintings of Celtic Mandalas. This is June's first exhibition. The Mandala, meaning circle, is used in many ancient cultures such as that of the Tibetan Monks and the Navaho Indians, and they are also used in Jungian psychology. Painting the Mandala creates a feeling of wholeness and oneness. The uplifting work of June Ferndale is done on small canvases with fabulous bright colours incorporating themes of love, joy and peace and some traditional symbols including the painstaking Celtic knot and animals such as the dragon, seahorse and boar.

This exhibition, entitled [dis]placed, brings these artists together for the first time in their combined Iinterpretations of this theme. Using photography, painting, drawing and mixed media [dis]placed informs the artists' varied concepts of time, space, place and memory to create deliberate figurative and spatial ambiguities in their work. New Perspectives: An Exhibition Of Student Works A new exhibition at Cavalier Gallery provides an overview of the work being undertaken and created by Level 1 and Short Course students of Brougham School of Art and Photography across a range of disciplines including painting, drawing, photography and printmaking. Everyone is welcome to come along to an informal opening to meet the artists, view their work and celebrate the occasion with them. Opening:

| Dates: | 27 June to 19 July 2008 | | Time: | Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm Friday 9am to 4pm Saturday 11am to 4pm | | Venue: | Cavalier Gallery - Brougham School of Art and Photography, 73 Malop Street, Geelong | | Cost: | Free | | Contact: | (03) 5229 9984 | | Email: | admin@broughamart.vic.edu.au | | Website: | www.broughamart.vic.edu.au | *NEW* GEELONG GALLERY - Multiple Listings Land Marks: Beyond The Surface - David Beaumont Land Marks: Beyond the surface is an exhibition of paintings inspired by the beauty and harshness of the Australian landscape and in particular the surface of the land at Lake Mungo, the Gammon Ranges, Pink Lakes and Lake Eyre. Sketching trips to these inland locations have been the starting point for this new body of work that marks a shift in David Beaumont's practice from the coastal seascapes for which he is well-known. Sections of thickly applied paint that rise from the surface of the canvas are juxtaposed with pared-back, almost transparent finishes, replicating the nuances of the landscape when closely observed. Beaumont's works invite considered observation and encourage the viewer to look 'beyond the surface' - to reveal the various layers of both his paintings and, more broadly, the Australian landscape in general. *NEW* Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking This exhibition brings together works by European and British master printmakers Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Thomas Bewick, Charles Meryon and James McNeill Whistler, with related images by Australian artists - past and present - such as Lionel Lindsay, John Shirlow, Jessie Traill, Rosalind Atkins and Marco Luccio, as a means of illustrating the different streams of influence that have contributed to the notably rich tradition of printmaking in Australia. Print Traditions - Sources Of Australian Printmaking presents works from Geelong Gallery's outstanding print collection alongside those from private and institutional collections including the Art Gallery of South Australia, Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne and the National Gallery of Victoria. LITTLE MALOP GALLERY Zbukvic + Pekel + Smales After an exceptional response to the Joseph Zbukvic, Peter Smales and Herman Pekel exhibition last year, Little Malop Gallery has invited them back. They need little introduction as three of Australia's foremost impressionist painters, and an opportunity to acquire new works by these artists is a rarity in Geelong. This exhibition of energetic, expressive watercolours and oil paintings will include many fine works based on the Geelong region and beyond, and if you were lucky you may have caught them painting on site at the waterfront recently! Be quick. QUEENSCLIFF PIER Artist in Residence Award winning Melbourne based artist Cameron Robbins will take up residency in Queenscliff to install two of his pieces on the Queenscliff Pier. Lifeboat Reverie is a sound sculpture with a tuned set of organ pipes driven by tidal movements which will be installed in the Rescue Boat Shed on the Queenscliff Pier. Also, at the end of the Pier Cameron will install a wind drawing machine - a mechanical drawing device that randomly collects wind energy and translates it into a sketch. While Cameron is in Queenscliff he intends to spend time researching artefacts and instruments in the Maritime Museum that will no doubt inform his works in the future. The residency will include an Artist Talk with Cameron and other opportunities for community to meet with him. SHEARER'S GALLERY Members' Bequest Exhibition The Shearers Arms Gallery is hosting an exciting Members' Bequest Exhibition to be judged by Joel Wolter. This exhibition is an award exhibition from bequests made to the society in all mediums. |

| Festivals and Events | Illustrated Talk - Trust For Nature Chris Lindorff will illuminate the role of Trust for Nature (TFN) in the acquisition and maintenance of TFN properties. TFN, a non-profit organisation, operates in several ways: first, by helping landowners place a covenant on their land for protection from sub-division, clearing or other threatening activities; secondly, by supporting landowners' efforts to best manage the land through landcare works, fencing, rates rebates and opportunities to learn more about their ecological communities. In addition to supporting covenants, TFN makes use of its revolving fund, based on bequests and donations, to buy parcels of land which are then sold on again after having covenants placed on them. Other significant land parcels are bought and retained by TFN or transferred to the National Parks system. Thus the work of TFN protects precious untouched native bush and preserves it for the future.

Screening - The Leopard For a film-maker wanting to show the tide of history the challenge is always how to balance the large with the small; the key events of history with individual stories including the need for character development and how to convey the meaning of change rather than just to show the changes themselves. These challenges beset master Italian film-maker Luchino Visconti in his faithful adaptation of Guiseppe di Lampedusa's internationally best-selling novel charting the demise of the old aristocratic order and the rise of the nouveau riche bourgeoisie. The film runs for 181 mins.

Ruby Moon Auditions Auditions for Matt Cameron's Ruby Moon, directed by Doug Mann, are being held (see details below). What happens when a child goes missing? What does a parent do when their worst nightmare comes true, their silent cries of 'surely not mine' go unanswered, and all their desperate searching is in vain? How to cling to hope, how to fight despair? How do you even hold on to sanity and each other? Ruby Moon walks the footpaths of our great, disconnected Australian suburbia in the wake of the disappearance of Ruby, a 10 year-old girl who went to visit her grandma one day and never came back. Since then, Ruby's parents have been trying to pick up the pieces and fit them together…into something that looks like Ruby. Ruby Moon is a powerful, grimly comic vision of the agony that is Gretel, Azaria, little Maddie and all the missing children. It is the tale of the Big Bad Wolf retold in a kaleidoscopic way you will not forget.
