This Week's Feature - Sportsman's Night | Damian Callinan in Sportsman's Night
 Damian Callinan
| Sportsman's Night, written and performed by award winning comedian Damian Callinan, exposes life in a country town where footy rules all. Bodgy Creek is a town that has seen better days. The population is dwindling; the local timber industry is under threat; and now to top it all off the footy club, The Bodgy Creek Roosters, has been banned for their involvement in a 'harmless melee'!
This riotous and energetic one man comedy inspired by the real life events of a country footy club banned for a melee that got out of hand is bound to be a hit in our football loving city. Damian's hilarious characters expose life in this fictional town we've all driven through on the way to somewhere else. This hilarious truly Australian show is being performed for one night only at the Potato Shed (see details below).
Damian has an extensive career to date. He was one of the stars of the TV sketch show Skithouse (Australia, NZ, UK and France); was a regular on the Australian Rules football comedy Before The Game and joined the cast of Channel 10's sketch The Wedge. His TV appearances include Rove Live, Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala, Joker Poker, Good Morning Australia, The Fat, Off Road and countless others.
His extensive radio career includes co-hosting stints on JJJ and 774ABC Melbourne as well as regular segments on Mix FM, Fox and MMM. He can currently be heard on Radio National doing regular satirical arts pieces and on 774ABC in a variety of character and co-hosting roles. Year after year he has produced quality shows on the Australian festival circuit that have showcased his skills as a gifted writer, stand-up and character comedian.
The media have said of him:
"Callinan is clever, intelligent and terrifically talented ... his character work is superb - a huge success." The Age
"One of the best shows on offer ... deserving of the wildest of applause." Herald Sun
"Damian Callinan stood up and proved why he is one of Australia's most successful comedians." Adelaide Advertiser

| PERFORMING ARTS | Possum Magic - The Musical This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of the uniquely Australian children's classic Possum Magic. To celebrate, Possum Magic - The Musical is coming to the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) as part of the 2008 Bendigo Bank Family Magic program. Since first being published in 1983, it has become an Australian literary classic and its author Mem Fox and illustrator Julie Vivas have become Australian literary icons. Possum Magic tells the story of Hush the baby possum, who is magically turned invisible by Grandma Poss to protect Hush from the dangers of the bush. When Grandma Poss forgets how to remove the spell, she and Hush must journey around Australia in search of the 'people food' that can make Hush visible again. In 1990 the book was adapted for the stage by Garry Ginivan Attractions, and in the following years the production has toured across the nation on 10 separate occasions, playing to more than 250,000 patrons. Featuring larger-than-life sized puppets and a cast of multi-talented performers, including GPAC's own prodigal son Mykel Jackson-Brown, Possum Magic - The Musical has stylishly transformed the story into a rollicking Australian musical, complete with lamingtons, pavlovas and Vegemite sandwiches.

They need little introduction as three of Australia's foremost impressionist painters, and an opportunity to acquire new works by these artists is a rarity in Geelong. This exhibition of energetic, expressive watercolours and oil paintings will include many fine works based on the Geelong region and beyond, and if you were lucky you may have caught them painting on site at the waterfront recently! Be quick. QUEENSCLIFF PIER Artist in Residence Award winning Melbourne based artist Cameron Robbins will take up residency in Queenscliff to install two of his pieces on the Queenscliff Pier. Lifeboat Reverie is a sound sculpture with a tuned set of organ pipes driven by tidal movements which will be installed in the Rescue Boat Shed on the Queenscliff Pier. Also, at the end of the Pier Cameron will install a wind drawing machine - a mechanical drawing device that randomly collects wind energy and translates it into a sketch. While Cameron is in Queenscliff he intends to spend time researching artefacts and instruments in the Maritime Museum that will no doubt inform his works in the future. The residency will include an Artist Talk with Cameron and other opportunities for community to meet with him. | Festivals and Events | Film - Mongol Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (Prisoner of the Mountains) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, Mongol. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, Mongol delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. Mongol shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor. There are sneak previews on June 13 to 15. Camping Under The Moonahs Art exhibition and assemblage by Deborah Brearley as part of the Wetlands Connections series of events.

TFN, a non-profit organisation, operates in several ways: first, by helping landowners place a covenant on their land for protection from sub-division, clearing or other threatening activities; secondly, by supporting landowners' efforts to best manage the land through landcare works, fencing, rates rebates and opportunities to learn more about their ecological communities. In addition to supporting covenants, TFN makes use of its revolving fund, based on bequests and donations, to buy parcels of land which are then sold on again after having covenants placed on them. Other significant land parcels are bought and retained by TFN or transferred to the National Parks system. Thus the work of TFN protects precious untouched native bush and preserves it for the future.

These challenges beset master Italian film-maker Luchino Visconti in his faithful adaptation of Guiseppe di Lampedusa's internationally best-selling novel charting the demise of the old aristocratic order and the rise of the nouveau riche bourgeoisie. | Opportunities and Employment | Information Night and Auditions Ruby Moon An information night for Matt Cameron's Ruby Moon, directed by Doug Mann is being held (see details below). What happens when a child goes missing? What does a parent do when their worst nightmare comes true, their silent cries of 'surely not mine' go unanswered, and all their desperate searching is in vain? How to cling to hope, how to fight despair? How do you even hold on to sanity and each other? Ruby Moon walks the footpaths of our great, disconnected Australian suburbia in the wake of the disappearance of Ruby, a 10 year-old girl who went to visit her grandma one day and never came back. Since then, Ruby's parents have been trying to pick up the pieces and fit them together…into something that looks like Ruby. Ruby Moon is a powerful, grimly comic vision of the agony that is Gretel, Azaria, little Maddie and all the missing children. It is the tale of the Big Bad Wolf retold in a kaleidoscopic way you will not forget.
