One of the world's finest pianists, highly regarded as a Chopin interpreter, Emanuel Ax will perform the composer's Second Piano Concerto with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Geelong (see details below).

This season sees Emanuel Ax performing with the major symphony orchestras around the world including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin, Chicago and Toronto symphony orchestras and the London Philharmonic.  He recently completed a solo recital tour in Europe and North America, performing in London's Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and New York's Carnegie Hall.  In the 2005-2006 season, Mr Ax served as Pianist-in-residence with the Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle in Berlin and London.  In the 2004-2005 season he contributed to a BBC documentary commemorating the Holocaust that aired on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, which was awarded a 2005 International Emmy.

Born in Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy.  His studies at the Juilliard School were supported by the sponsorship of the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, and he subsequently won the Young Concert Artists Award.  In 1974 he captured public attention when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv.  In 1975 he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists followed four years later by the coveted Avery Fisher Prize.

Making his Australian debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Robin Ticciati is a sensational rising star on the international conducting circuit.  A violinist, pianist and percussionist by training, London-born Ticciati turned to conducting at the age of 15 under the guidance of Sir Colin Davis and Sir Simon Rattle, while still a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.  Still in his mid-twenties, he is currently Music Director and Artistic Advisor to the Gävle Symphony Orchestra (Sweden) and is Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour, a position he assumed in January 2007.  In June 2005 he became the youngest conductor to conduct at La Scala, Milan.

For his Melbourne performances, he leads the MSO in Frank Bridges The Sea, a sweeping surging picture of the sea in its many facets - from shimmering moonlight to fierce tempest.  Ticciati closes the program with Sibelius' Symphony No. 5 which is compact yet heroic, epic in scope, yet enormously concentrated in expression. Its famous finale, with its swinging horn theme, is intensely rousing.

Picnic At Hanging Rock Revisited
Anglesea Performing Arts and Clonard College's co-production is an adaptation of Joan Lindsay's classic 1967 novel Picnic At Hanging Rock and deals with the aftermath of the mysterious disappearance of a group of schoolgirls and a Mistress from Appleyard College from the slopes of Hanging Rock.  This hauntingly beautiful tale is underscored by a soundscape created by Martin Cox which blends the guttural earthy sounds of the Australian bush and the evocative plaintive drone of the didgeridoo and juxtaposes these sounds with the refined romantic melodies of string quartets and piano sonatas.  A complimentary glass of champagne is offered at 7.30pm on opening night.  Tea, coffee or a glass of wine will be available after the show and you are invited to join the cast for a chat.

Possum Magic - The Musical
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of the uniquely Australian children's classic Possum Magic.  To celebrate, Possum Magic - The Musical is coming to the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) as part of the 2008 Bendigo Bank Family Magic program.  Since first being published in 1983, it has become an Australian literary classic and its author Mem Fox and illustrator Julie Vivas have become Australian literary icons.  Possum Magic tells the story of Hush the baby possum, who is magically turned invisible by Grandma Poss to protect Hush from the dangers of the bush.  When Grandma Poss forgets how to remove the spell, she and Hush must journey around Australia in search of the 'people food'  that can make Hush visible again.  In 1990 the book was adapted for the stage by Garry Ginivan Attractions, and in the following years the production has toured across the nation on 10 separate occasions, playing to more than 250,000 patrons.  Featuring larger-than-life sized puppets and a cast of multi-talented performers, including GPAC's own prodigal son Mykel Jackson-Brown, Possum Magic - The Musical has stylishly transformed the story into a rollicking Australian musical, complete with lamingtons, pavlovas and Vegemite sandwiches.

GEELONG GALLERY
Continuous Moment - Damiano Bertoli
The three components of this exhibition - a central installation and two related paintings - are part of an ongoing investigation by Damiano Bertoli into the notion of 'continuous moment' or, in other words, the ways in which art history retains a relevance for contemporary practice, with a constant engagement in most forms of art between the past and the present.  Each of the exhibited works makes reference to a haunting painting by the nineteenth century German Romantic artist, Caspar David Friedrich, titled Das Eismeer (The Sea of Ice) - a work that depicts the fateful end to a fictitious North Sea expedition.  Consistent with the German Romantic approach that emphasized the monumentality of nature in opposition to the comparative frailty of man, Friedrich's painting reveals traces of a shipwreck that are dwarfed by an immense pyramid of shattered ice.  Friedrich's narrative of exploration and tragedy at sea is replaced by a different kind of human presence and endeavour in Bertoli's sculptural work Continuous Moment, with its constructed geometric forms combined with discarded materials from building sites. Bertoli's narrative shifts to that of the artist in the studio, to the successes and failures of art making rather than the failed North Sea expedition evoked by Friedrich.  A floor talk of the exhibition will be presented by Damiano Bertoli, exhibiting artist.

Film - Mongol

Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (Prisoner of the Mountains) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, Mongol.  Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, Mongol delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162.  As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader.  Mongol shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.  Village Cinema have 5 double passes to sneak screenings from June 13 to 15.  Call the Arts and Culture Department on (03) 5227 0878 to receive your complimentary ticket.

Information Night and Auditions
Ruby Moon

An information night for Matt Cameron's Ruby Moon, directed by Doug Mann is being held (see details below).  What happens when a child goes missing?   What does a parent do when their worst nightmare comes true, their silent cries of 'surely not mine' go unanswered, and all their desperate searching is in vain?  How to cling to hope, how to fight despair?  How do you even hold on to sanity and each other?  Ruby Moon walks the footpaths of our great, disconnected Australian suburbia in the wake of the disappearance of Ruby, a 10 year-old girl who went to visit her grandma one day and never came back.  Since then, Ruby's parents have been trying to pick up the pieces and fit them together…into something that looks like Ruby.  Ruby Moon is a powerful, grimly comic vision of the agony that is Gretel, Azaria, little Maddie and all the missing children.  It is the tale of the Big Bad Wolf retold in a kaleidoscopic way you will not forget.

He also has directed shows for GMCC (Diamond Jubilee in 2002), 2 shows for Queenscliff Lighthouse Theatre Group, and 3 shows for B.E.A.T., with a fourth, A Tribute To The Hollywood Musicals, currently in rehearsal.  Devised and directed by Ron and Maureen, this revue showcases well-loved songs from movie musicals from the 1930s to the present day.  With a cast of 30 talented singers and dancers, this show is sure to prove very popular (see details below for dates and other information).

Ron has one unfulfilled ambition to teach singing and stagecraft in Geelong, which he hopes to commence in the very near future.
