This Week's Feature - National Celtic Festival 2008 | The Voyage of Bran
 Gaelic Storm
| There's a chill to the air, the days are getting shorter and the mist is lingering a little longer over the beautiful seaside town of Portarlington. It's the perfect atmosphere for the upcoming National Celtic Festival 2008 held over the June long weekend (see details below).
From Friday evening until Monday afternoon there is much to enjoy. The huge array of entertainment ranges from lively stage concerts to intimate acoustic sessions. Festival venues include the Ol' Duke, Parks Hall, Wine Bar and the Village Stage, set amid the food and craft stalls of the lively Celtic Market.
As always the National Celtic Festival has something for all ages. This year's children's entertainment includes a Celtic Kid's Film Festival featuring animation, drama, comedy and more from the Little Big Shots international film festival for kids. This Celtic collection is showing exclusively at the festival and has been produced for, and by, children of all ages.
Festival organisers have just announced the inclusion of some exceptional international acts to join this year's musical line-up. Scottish legends Battlefield Band will bring its unique sound, honed over three decades, by combining 200 years of Scottish traditional music with modern self-penned songs and instruments.
US-based Gaelic Storm will play at the festival as part of its first ever Australian tour. If you look at where Gaelic Storm is touring, the list reads something like Dublin, New York and Portarlington!
The line up continues with New Zealand band Brazen and Australia's own Trouble In The Kitchen who will be performing their bon voyage gig. An absolute favourite will be the one-and-only Bushwackers, whose energy will be contagious. Festival organisers were blown away by a record number of teenage bands from around Australia applying to play.

| Performing Arts | Picnic At Hanging Rock Revisited Anglesea Performing Arts and Clonard College's co-production is an adaptation of Joan Lindsay's classic 1967 novel Picnic At Hanging Rock and deals with the aftermath of the mysterious disappearance of a group of schoolgirls and a Mistress from Appleyard College from the slopes of Hanging Rock. This hauntingly beautiful tale is underscored by a soundscape created by Martin Cox which blends the guttural earthy sounds of the Australian bush and the evocative plaintive drone of the didgeridoo and juxtaposes these sounds with the refined romantic melodies of string quartets and piano sonatas. A complimentary glass of champagne is offered at 7.30pm on opening night. Tea, coffee or a glass of wine will be available after the show and you are invited to join the cast for a chat. Robin Ticciati - conductor Emanuel Ax - piano Chopin, Poland's most famous composer, was only 19 when he performed his second concerto for the first time. It contains the moonlight poetry, rhythmic vitality and exquisite keyboard writing for which his music is so admired, and will be played by one of the great Chopin pianists of our day, his compatriot Emanuel Ax. Finnish master Jean Sibelius had a command of orchestral colour and an acute sensitivity to landscape. His Fifth Symphony is compact yet heroic, epic in scope yet enormously concentrated in expression. Robin Ticciati, one of Britain's brightest young conductors, is Music Director of Sweden's Gävle Symphony Orchestra and of Glyndebourne on Tour. He began his conducting studies when he was 15 years old, under the guidence of Sir Colin Davis and Sir Simon Rattle. In June 2005 he became the youngest conductor to conduct at La Scala, Milan.

VIGEX is held every two years and is co-ordinated by a voluntary committee largely drawn from the Geelong Camera Club and Corio Bay Camera Club. Prints are accepted in the following categories: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Photo Journalism, Creative and People. In 2008, photographers from over 40 countries entered a record of number prints - over 4,000. A panel of three experienced Australian photographers judged this year's entries: the top 72 prints awarded Merit and above are exhibited at the Geelong Gallery. Continuous Moment - Damiano Bertoli The three components of this exhibition - a central installation and two related paintings - are part of an ongoing investigation by Damiano Bertoli into the notion of 'continuous moment' or, in other words, the ways in which art history retains a relevance for contemporary practice, with a constant engagement in most forms of art between the past and the present. Each of the exhibited works makes reference to a haunting painting by the nineteenth century German Romantic artist, Caspar David Friedrich, titled Das Eismeer (The Sea of Ice) - a work that depicts the fateful end to a fictitious North Sea expedition. Consistent with the German Romantic approach that emphasized the monumentality of nature in opposition to the comparative frailty of man, Friedrich's painting reveals traces of a shipwreck that are dwarfed by an immense pyramid of shattered ice. Friedrich's narrative of exploration and tragedy at sea is replaced by a different kind of human presence and endeavour in Bertoli's sculptural work Continuous moment, with its constructed geometric forms combined with discarded materials from building sites. Bertoli's narrative shifts to that of the artist in the studio, to the successes and failures of art making rather than the failed North Sea expedition evoked by Friedrich. A floor talk of the exhibition will be presented by Damiano Bertoli, exhibiting artist. Exhibition:
THE WINTERGARDEN lianne @ wintergarden Lianne Gough, local artist and 2007 Winner of the Gallipoli Prize is opening an exhibition of her new works. This exciting selection of work showcases Lianne's unique style and perspective. While the exhibition also includes landscapes, Lianne has again chosen to focus on portraiture which demonstrates her passion for chronicling the human spirit. Her paintings describe the subjects' attitude to life, by the look in their eyes, the way they stand or their place on the canvas. Art enthusiasts and professionals alike will be able to appreciate and enjoy this selection of works, giving us a glimpse of our community through one woman's eyes. Everyone is welcome to the opening of an exhibition of new works by Lianne Gough. |
