Arts Bulletin - 276 22 May 2008
This Week's Feature - Things To Do With Words | Helen Garner
Emilie Zoey Baker and Sean Whelan
Joel Deane | Deakin's Faculty of Arts and Education is holding a special event, Things to do with words, at their Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds. The event is free and open to the general public and secondary school students.
Those who have a love of writing and the written word often ponder how they can turn their passion into a profession, and Deakin would like to introduce them to the many degree choices they have to offer in these fields and illustrate the varied careers available to writers.
This unique event will feature guest speakers such as Helen Garner, the Geelong-born author whose books include MonkeyGrip, The First Stone, Joe Cinque's Consolation and, most recently, The Spare Room. Garner's work covers numerous genres, from fiction to journalism and from creative non-fiction to screenwriting. She has also won numerous prizes for her writing, including the inaugural Melbourne Prize for Literature in 2006, which awarded Garner $60,000 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Australian literature and to cultural and intellectual life.
Other speakers will include Joel Deane, speech writer for the Victorian Premier John Brumby. Deane is also an author, having published a novel, Another, as well as two books of poems, Subterranean Radio Songs and Magisterium. Joel has also worked as a newspaper journalist, internet and TV producer, and press secretary.
Deakin University has invited Helen and Joel as guests to illustrate how a love of words can lead to an array of careers in Literature and the Media
Anyez Lindop, a past Deakin student and now Publicity Manager at Penguin, will also speak on how her Honours degree in Literary Studies at Deakin in Geelong has allowed her to pursue a career in the publishing world.
A fun day is planned with not only the above speakers but also a special spoken-word performance, Sweet Cowboy, by the award-winning Melbourne performance poets Emilie Zoey Baker and Sean Whelan. Baker and Whelan have been performing their poetry for over ten years, and their work has been published and performed nationally and internationally. Baker has an EP out called Fannyism, and Whelan's work has been broadcast on radio RRR and JJJ.

The story and the message of The Little Prince is timeless, beautiful and of significance. During the Second World War a pilot crashes his plane in the Sahara desert where he meets the Little Prince, a mystical creature from another planet. The Little Prince tells why he left his planet, his beloved rose and his three volcanos. We travel with the Little Prince and follow his adventures as he meets up with some very interesting characters. This is a story for adults - or grownups - every word has a meaning and every character shows us an insight into human nature. We often forget what is important in life; we get caught up in matters of consequence. This hauntingly beautiful tale is underscored by a soundscape created by Martin Cox which blends the guttural earthy sounds of the Australian bush and the evocative plaintive drone of the didgeridoo and juxtaposes these sounds with the refined romantic melodies of string quartets and piano sonatas. VIGEX is held every two years and is co-ordinated by a voluntary committee largely drawn from the Geelong Camera Club and Corio Bay Camera Club. Prints are accepted in the following categories: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Photo Journalism, Creative and People. In 2008, photographers from over 40 countries entered a record of number prints - over 4,000. A panel of three experienced Australian photographers judged this year's entries: the top 72 prints awarded Merit and above are exhibited at the Geelong Gallery. Continuous Moment - Damiano Bertoli The three components of this exhibition - a central installation and two related paintings - are part of an ongoing investigation by Damiano Bertoli into the notion of 'continuous moment' or, in other words, the ways in which art history retains a relevance for contemporary practice, with a constant engagement in most forms of art between the past and the present. Each of the exhibited works makes reference to a haunting painting by the nineteenth century German Romantic artist, Caspar David Friedrich, titled Das eismeer (The sea of ice) - a work that depicts the fateful end to a fictitious North Sea expedition. Consistent with the German Romantic approach that emphasized the monumentality of nature in opposition to the comparative frailty of man, Friedrich's painting reveals traces of a shipwreck that are dwarfed by an immense pyramid of shattered ice. Friedrich's narrative of exploration and tragedy at sea is replaced by a different kind of human presence and endeavour in Bertoli's sculptural work Continuous moment, with its constructed geometric forms combined with discarded materials from building sites. Bertoli's narrative shifts to that of the artist in the studio, to the successes and failures of art making rather than the failed North Sea expedition evoked by Friedrich. A floor talk of the exhibition will be presented by Damiano Bertoli, exhibiting artist. Floor Talk:
