This Week's Feature - Picnic At Hanging Rock Revisited | The Hon. Michael Fitzhubert in Picnic at Hanging Rock
 The disasterous picnic
 Appleyard College staff
| "Miranda always said 'everything begins and ends at exactly the right moment'." So says the impressionable young orphan, Sara, who was the only Appleyard College student left behind on that fateful St Valentine's Day, 1900. The memory of Miranda weaves a thread that connects her with a disparate group of people. Her disappearance, along with that of two other students and a teacher, haunts and destroys the lives of all those she knew.
Anglesea Performing Arts and Clonard College's co-production of Joan Lindsay's classic 1967 novel reveals the fallout of the terrible picnic. The play, an adaptation of the novel Picnic At Hanging Rock deals with the aftermath of the mysterious disappearance of a group of schoolgirls and a Mistress from Appleyard College from the slopes of Hanging Rock. After going off for a stroll during the annual picnic, they were never to be seen again despite numerous searches over many months.
Only one of the girls, Irma Leopold, was found on the upper slopes by a young Englishman who had become obsessed by the disappearance. He was haunted by the image of one of the missing girls, Miranda, and went searching for them three weeks after the fateful day. Irma claimed she had no memory of what had happened to her and the others up on the rock and why part of her intimate apparel, namely her corset, was missing.
The director, Iris Walshe-Howling, had an auspicious introduction to Australian theatre in the late 1960s and 1970s working at La Mama. She worked as an actor and director in Melbourne until she moved to Lorne six years ago. Since moving to the coast, Walshe-Howling has become involved with the Anglesea Performing Arts company, most recently directing the acclaimed 2006 production, The House of Bernarda Alba.
This production features period costumes, an evocative minimalist set and a series of slides taken from Hanging Rock to establish the scene.
Assisting the audience to follow the changing locations and developments of the plot is a choir of ghostly school girls. Members of the main cast join a group of Clonard College students, directed by fellow cast member, Janine McKenzie.
This hauntingly beautiful tale is underscored by a soundscape created by Martin Cox. It blends the guttural earthy sounds of the Australian bush and the evocative plaintive drone of the didgeridoo and juxtaposes these sounds with the refined romantic melodies of string quartets and piano sonatas. All of this contrasts the European sensibility of the time with the rugged landscape of this ancient and hostile continent. It is this very incompatibility of cultures that is explored in the production, Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Complimentary glass of champagne at 7.30pm on opening night. Tea, coffee or a glass of wine will be available after the show and you are invited to join the cast for a chat.

| Performing Arts | Wicked Sisters Torquay Theatre Troupe Inc is proud to announce that it will soon be presenting Alma de Groen's play Wicked Sisters. The play is about four women who reunite after the death of one on their husbands. They talk about their university days together and unravel a story of friendship, loyalty, betrayal and revenge. The play is at times very funny and loving yet also sad and bitter. Above all it is about the life journey of these four strong, yet vulnerable, women played by Maureen Eaton, Maryanne Doolan, Lisa Berry and Carleen Thoernberg. The play is directed by Michael Baker, who has delighted audiences in Torquay with his dynamic performances and direction over the last five years.

The Melbourne Theatre Company returns to GPAC with its production of John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, starring screen and stage favourite Marcus Graham (E-Street, The Rocky Horror Show and Channel 9's controversial Underbelly). Needing to dispel his boredom, Richard Hannay decides on a carefree evening at the theatre. But before the night is over he has a dead blonde in his sitting room and a mystery to solve. What are the 39 Steps? To answer that and to clear his name he must head north to Scotland, foil dastardly foreign agents, elude the police and win over a pretty girl. Adapted by Patrick Barlow, whose play The Messiah was a huge success during the 2007 Alcoa Theatre Season, this is a no po-faced screen-to-stage transition - every scene of the original is intact, but pared down to the funny bone. The wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. Directed by Maria Aitken, the inspired director of the play's triumphant West End run, this Olivier Award winning comedy comes direct from MTC's 2008 season. Not to be missed.

For the past eight weeks people of all abilities from all over Geelong have been working with Canadian born Director Carole Mallett to bring new life to the classic book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. The story and the message of The Little Prince is timeless, beautiful and of significance. During the Second World War a pilot crashes his plane in the Sahara desert where he meets the Little Prince, a mystical creature from another planet. The Little Prince tells why he left his planet, his beloved rose and his three volcanos. We travel with the Little Prince and follow his adventures as he meets up with some very interesting characters. This is a story for adults - or grownups - every word has a meaning and every character shows us an insight into human nature. We often forget what is important in life; we get caught up in matters of consequence. Take some time out and revisit the joy and innocence of The Little Prince. *The Little Prince is a City of Greater Geelong Community Arts Grants Program-funded event. VIGEX is held every two years and is co-ordinated by a voluntary committee largely drawn from the Geelong Camera Club and Corio Bay Camera Club. Prints are accepted in the following categories: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Photo Journalism, Creative and People. In 2008, photographers from over 40 countries entered a record of number prints - over 4,000. A panel of three experienced Australian photographers judged this year's entries: the top 72 prints awarded Merit and above are exhibited at the Geelong Gallery. *NEW* Continuous Moment - Damiano Bertoli The three components of this exhibition - a central installation and two related paintings - are part of an ongoing investigation by Damiano Bertoli into the notion of 'continuous moment' or, in other words, the ways in which art history retains a relevance for contemporary practice, with a constant engagement in most forms of art between the past and the present. Each of the exhibited works makes reference to a haunting painting by the nineteenth century German Romantic artist, Caspar David Friedrich, titled Das eismeer (The sea of ice) - a work that depicts the fateful end to a fictitious North Sea expedition. Consistent with the German Romantic approach that emphasized the monumentality of nature in opposition to the comparative frailty of man, Friedrich's painting reveals traces of a shipwreck that are dwarfed by an immense pyramid of shattered ice. Friedrich's narrative of exploration and tragedy at sea is replaced by a different kind of human presence and endeavour in Bertoli's sculptural work Continuous moment, with its constructed geometric forms combined with discarded materials from building sites. Bertoli's narrative shifts to that of the artist in the studio, to the successes and failures of art making rather than the failed North Sea expedition evoked by Friedrich. A floor talk of the exhibition will be presented by Damiano Bertoli, exhibiting artist. Floor Talk:
