Arts Bulletin - 274 8 May 2008
This Week's Feature - Music At The Basilica - Organ Fireworks For Pentecost | Thomas Heywood
 St Mary's - Barry Bell watercolour 2006.
Frank De Rosso, Artistic Director | Music at the Basilica is bringing Melbourne's Thomas Heywood to the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels on Mother's Day as part of the Seasons 2008 Series. Organ Fireworks For Pentecost will be a concert with a difference!
Thomas Heywood is one of the world's most exciting organists, famed for the fun and excitement he brings to his concerts and for his commentaries throughout the program. His 'mesmeric hands and dancing feet' have dazzled the critics world-wide as he plays his brilliant transcriptions of the world's best loved works. This concert presents Chopin's Valse Brillante, Strauss Jnr's On the Beautiful Blue Danube, Heywood's own Humoresque for a Pedal Trombone, works from Mozart, Mascagni and Hollins, Handel's The Harmonious Blacksmith and, appropriately, his Music for the Royal Fireworks. No wonder the critics have raved, with words like 'Stunning! Brilliant! What a concert! Don't even think of missing him!'
A special camera set-up allows the audience to see those mesmeric hands and dancing feet in action on-screen. What a treat! And because the concert is on Mother's Day there's another special treat - one free ticket for every group of three that includes a mother! And with afternoon tea, of course!
A City of Greater Geelong Community Arts Grant of $5000 means that Music at the Basilica can continue its excellent Seasons concert series for a third year. This unique venue, with its fantastic acoustics and so many spaces for performers to use, allows plenty of scope for imagination in the way the music is presented. As well as organ recitals, new and unusual choral and instrumental works will take their turn with Gregorian chant, medieval music and everything in between. The artists are amongst the best in their fields with a particular emphasis on Australian performers. Accomplished local artists, emerging artists and young performers are included in the series. Other concerts in the Seasons Series will feature Roger Heagney, Manfred Pohlenz and Acord Early Music Ensemble, with Laura Vaughan, Rosemary Hodgson and Vivien Hamilton combining for the last of the series in October. The Geelong Community Orchestra will give one of its 25th Anniversary Performances in September.
* Music at the Basilica is a City of Greater Geelong Community Arts Grants Program-funded event.

| Performing Arts | Prepare To Seize The Day With Heroes A daring plan to seize the day and escape from lonely lives makes for an amusing and touching night of theatre in Heroes, an Olivier Award-winning comedy of camaraderie. The audience is introduced to Gustave, Henri and Philippe, three First World War veterans who spend their days on a quiet terrace of their military nursing home, meeting every morning to reflect on the peculiar circumstances in their equally peculiar surroundings. They pass their time grumbling about the staff, dreaming about young women and arguing over whether a statue of a dog is alive. Nothing changes much for these men, until the day Gustave hatches a daring plan to make a break for freedom, taking the dog with them. Max Gillies, Dennis Olsen and Robert Alexander star in this tender comedy that sparkles with Tom Stoppard's trademark wit and wordplay. Stoppard translated the play from its original French incarnation, Le Vent de Peupliers (The Wind in the Poplars), with the approval and assistance of its author, Gérald Sibleyras.

The play is about four women who reunite after the death of one on their husbands. They talk about their university days together and unravel a story of friendship, loyalty, betrayal and revenge. The play is at times very funny and loving yet also sad and bitter. Above all it is about the life journey of these four strong, yet vulnerable, women played by Maureen Eaton, Maryanne Doolan, Lisa Berry and Carleen Thoernberg. The play is directed by Michael Baker, who has delighted audiences in Torquay with his dynamic performances and direction over the last five years.

The Melbourne Theatre Company returns to GPAC with its production of John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, starring screen and stage favourite Marcus Graham (E-Street, The Rocky Horror Show and Channel 9's controversial Underbelly). Needing to dispel his boredom, Richard Hannay decides on a carefree evening at the theatre. But before the night is over he has a dead blonde in his sitting room and a mystery to solve. What are the 39 Steps? To answer that and to clear his name he must head north to Scotland, foil dastardly foreign agents, elude the police and win over a pretty girl. Adapted by Patrick Barlow, whose play The Messiah was a huge success during the 2007 Alcoa Theatre Season, this is no po-faced screen-to-stage transition - every scene of the original is intact, but pared down to the funny bone. The wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. Directed by Maria Aitken, the inspired director of the play's triumphant West End run, this Olivier Award winning comedy comes direct from MTC's 2008 season. Not to be missed.
