Arts Bulletin 273 1 May 2008
This Week's Feature - Dancetalk 2008 | Random Takeaway. Random Takeaway Physical Theatre. Performers: Josh Mitchell and Renae Langerak.
Kirsty Yoga Dance Geelong based performer, Kirsty Reilly.
 The Loft Studio Space
| Dancetalk 2008 is a unique networking opportunity and social gathering of local Geelong dancers and teachers being held at The Loft Studio Space (see details below). This informal event focuses on making new connections and celebrates the contribution of all dance educators throughout the Greater Geelong region.
Most people lead increasingly busy lives. Dancetalk provides a moment for dancers and teachers to take some time out from their often hectic schedules and catch up with colleagues and friends. The evening will also feature some intimate performances and can be a fantastic opportunity for emerging dance artists, choreographers and dance groups, amateur or professional, to present new works or work in progress in an informal and relaxed environment.
This year's performances include a new solo work from seasoned Geelong dancer, Kirsty Reilly, a work in progress showing from room2move dance company (a preview of their new piece for The Nextwave Festival) as well as an African Dance and Drumming performance from Wild Moves. Special Guests include the dynamic Melbournian duo, Random Takeaway performing a ten- minute work combining breathtaking physical stunts and contemporary dance.
This inaugural event is being hosted by The Loft Studio Space which is a busy community space housed near the banks of the Barwon River. The renovated studio is called home by numerous dance groups and dance practitioners. The Loft facilitates many dance related events throughout the year and shows a commitment to fostering new work by providing regular space grants to individuals and companies. The director, Lyndel Freeman hopes to see Dancetalk become an annual event.
The Geelong dance community is wonderfully broad and encompasses many dance styles and groups; independent artists, non profit dance companies, dance schools, presenters, private studios, secondary schools, businesses, performers, supporters, thinkers and dance lovers. All of these groups are important, yet rarely do they get the opportunity to unite informally and enable individuals to explore ideas and network with like-minded colleagues, to talk about their dance form, promote upcoming dance events and to generally support one another which in turn can benefit and build audiences.
A warm invitation is extended to all, to join other dance enthusiasts for a glass of wine, nibbles, terrific performances and most importantly, extended conversations with new and old friends.

The audience is introduced to Gustave, Henri and Philippe, three First World War veterans who spend their days on a quiet terrace of their military nursing home, meeting every morning to reflect on the peculiar circumstances in their equally peculiar surroundings. They pass their time grumbling about the staff, dreaming about young women and arguing over whether a statue of a dog is alive. Nothing changes much for these men, until the day Gustave hatches a daring plan to make a break for freedom, taking the dog with them. Max Gillies, Dennis Olsen and Robert Alexander star in this tender comedy that sparkles with Tom Stoppard's trademark wit and wordplay. Stoppard translated the play from its original French incarnation, Le Vent de Peupliers (The Wind in the Poplars), with the approval and assistance of its author, Gérald Sibleyras.

| Artist of the Month - Chris Muir | Chris Muir
 A scene from Stained
 | Playwright and amateur raconteur Chris Muir has been writing for theatre and performance for the last seven years, and his latest work Stained continues his theatrical relationship with the Courthouse Youth Arts Centre. This play asks some difficult questions of contemporary suburbia and our response to fundamental human concerns.
He discovered the world of independent theatre while studying at Deakin and was immediately enthralled. His association with the Courthouse Youth Arts Centre began as a participant in the Headspin Mentorship program, where he met Kylie Gral. Since then Chris and Kylie formed the production company Mechanical Toothpick and have created a number of site-specific works. Their shows incorporate physical theatre and text-based performance, developed with the performers throughout the rehearsal process.
Stained was initially written as an Honors level creative writing thesis at the University of Melbourne. Chris had originally completed a Bachelor of Arts, not a creative writing course, so the rigors of writing an extended creative piece while fulfilling the academic criteria was a new challenge. It forced him to take a more disciplined and professional approach than he had in the past and, in the end, was proud of the work.
Stained questions contemporary western society's relationship with violence into the microcosm of a shared house where the tenants soon discover they are to be evicted. As the three emotionally-stunted twenty-somethings deal with the situation with violent outbursts, psychic disintegration and twisted justification, the three inevitably come to play their 'roles' in the shocking conclusion.
Prior to writing this piece Chris had become interested in the work of British playwright Sarah Kane, particularly the way in which she tackled innovation in the form of her work, beyond the infamously violent or sexually-explicit content. He was interested in the way in violence is culturally constructed as acceptable or unacceptable in our mediated society, and how theatrical violence could be aesthetically effective on stage, and engage an audience in questioning the social constructs that are employed to position violence as a political tool. Chris has always being drawn to a presentational, expressionistic approach. Like other works it comes out of a seemingly ‘realistic' beginning – the world of the play slowly shifting to reveal itself and its own brand of weirdness.
This is a genuinely contemporary work from a very talented writer.
WARNING: This performance is for over 18s only, as it contains scenes of simulated violence, sexual activity and graphic language.
